I started a thread in the general hardware about a friend who is building a ultra budget pc for used parts for his sons first gaming PC. He has been talking to someone who is selling a FX8350 and 990FX sabertooth R2.0, who is asking for 60 each. That seems like a fair price to me, but i wanted to ask what you guys think?

I know, i mentioned this to him this morning, but he likes to re-use and make new stuff out of old rubbish. So it seems, he is trying to do the same with the PC. Ryzen 3 seems to be a great buy at the moment, i am considering it for my up coming build, just waiting for the GPU prices to come back down if not it will be 1050ti until they do.

+1
The prices are fairly reasonable, however it has probably been overclocked to within an inch of its life at least once (who would not?).

However with Ryzen there is a DDR4 outlay to consider.

I know they seem reasonable, thats a risk with buying 2nd hand you don't know what they have been used for.

That was one of his reasons for buying 2nd hand, the cost of ram at the mo DDR 4 is around £140 for 2x8GB. When he can get the same DDR3 for £50?

Is the PC intended to be kept for a fair while with gaming being a core requirement? For what is a small saving in the scheme of the full build I wouldn't go with the less suitable setup with no worthwhile upgrade options.

A B350 board will have no trouble handling a higher core count, it's an easy upgrade to more cores with higher IPC and higher clockspeeds with Zen2 in a couple of years or you can go second hand and re-use older Zen1 as I see a lot upgrading once out. Go with 8GB ram for now and throw in another 8GB in the system down the line as needed.

He doesn’t want to spend to much in case his son doesn’t get on with PC gaming he hasn’t lost out on to much, he is willing to build a good system later on if needed. So i can see why he might be considering this i almost went down this line last year myself. I almost brought FX series parts from brother in law as i had used them in the past. But thanks to this forum i decided to wait for Ryzen and will most likely do as you have said myself.

Sounds quite expensive for old second hand kit with not much upgrade path. Does the CPU come with a cooler? I would encourage him to push for a lower bundle price i.e. below £100 for the pair.

No its just the CPU and mother board. The seller was trying to offer him an AIO for another £60, what i said no to as you can get air coolers new for £20 if he wanted. I told him last night he buys them not to pay more than £100.00 and that he should really look at Ryzen 3 giving him a upgrade path if his boy like it, making it cheaper in the long run.

Well, he has gone and brought Ryzen3 1200 for his son computer not sure which GPU yet, i think he would be best getting a 1050ti with the current situation with GPUS with the view to upgrade the CPU and GPU later on.
