Falken 912....any good in the wet?

So you going with the CF1's or trying the 912's? Be interested in what you think of either choice you make as like you, I've no intention of changing the wheels to 15's just yet, unless a set come up that are too much of a bargain to turn down, and will be needing some new rubber.

Why bother with crap stuff like toyo cf1 when you can get decent stuff like Conti PremiumContact2 in that size for not much more money.

Got a link? I've searched and all that comes up is EcoContact 3's for an extra ~£10 a tyre which reviews from MX5 owners haven't been as good as CF1's?

What do you have on your MX5?

I don't have an MX5, but those tyres are on camskill for just over £40 a pop.

Just to be clear, they were scored very well in the ADAC tyre test and this is why I mention it. I'll be buying some at some point.

Cheers, Camskill...that's always one place I forget the name of when looking, I've been to black circles, e-tyre, event tyres, mytyres etc etc. I presume that's ~£40 without fitting?

I'll have a look into those. Thanks

Yes really - I was looking for some PremiumContacts in 15 inch the other day and was staggered to find they were basically 5-10 quid a corner tops more than all the junk.

Even at 14"? I spent ages looking and ended up with bloody falkens... so I hope you're not right!

I'd just like to say that I personally wouldn't bother with tyre recommendations unless they are coming from someone who owns the same car as you, and drives in a similar fashion.

For example, I had FK452's on the 360hp Cerb and they were very good, I have them on the 400hp Jag and they're abysmal. I wouldn't use anything else when I had the Cerb, I wouldn't buy them again for the Jag. The power delivery and vehicle charactersitics are entirely different between the two cars, and what works well for one, doesn't work at all for the other. Although they have similar power outputs, the peak torque is nearly 100lb/ft different, and the supercharged Jag produces considerably more torque at the lower rev range than the race oriented Cerb engine. The Jag is also a lot heavier, so the tyre has more work to do shoving the car forward (downforce from the extra weight of that Jag is probably not that much better, as the Cerb uses narrower tyres, 245 vs 275 so the Jag weight is spread over a wider surface area). Obviously there are differing recommended tyre pressures to take into account too. All this means that there are vast differences between the work these tyres are doing in these scenarios and, as such, even the same tyre types produce very different real life performance.

Basically, if you want to know what works, ask Mk1 MX-5 owners what they use, and bear in mind those who drive in a similar fashion to you (it's no use being told "these grip like glue" if the driver never pushes the car past 40mph, and only drives on hot sunny days).

Well I put the pair of Firestone's on it for now, until I can afford 15" wheels - and its like night and day. A bit of tyre switching at the garage that fitted them, so I have the 2 new on the back, then the "best of a bad bunch" on the front. Loads more rear end grip now, and only a touch of understeer - the fronts will be replaced early next month :)

Never got around to buying tyres the last time I read a thread on Falkens. Very interested in the PC2s though from what has been said. Would be fitting on a '98 Civic Coupé with 185/60/14 specs. Really don't want a noisy tyre if I can help it, within the limitations of my somewhat ageing car of course ;)
