I just bought a new pc more than capable of running fallout 3, and it keeps crashing.

Has anyone come across this also, and come to a work around for it?

The pc runs everything else i play fine. Ive updated the drivers and the usual junk, im pretty sure its just the game being crap, as there's forum post after forum post dedictaed to it on the intrawebs, but i can't seem to find a working solution.

Just thought i'd ask the peeps on here :)

Im on ati xfire 4850 gfx cards
Phenom AMD tri core
8 gig RAM
Windows Vista 64.

The game runs fine for like 20 mins max, then it crashes. I havent even left vault 101 yet. :(

All gfx card drivers are up to date. Infact the computer is brand new from Overclockers, first thing i did was update everything.

Its not the pc.

I thought it might have been my 5.1 surround sound.

Also, when i patched the game up to the latest patch, it couldnt get past the opening scene where you get born.

Only way i can play it, is if i do a fresh install, and dont patch it up. And not play it using GFWL.

The last latest patch made my game about as stable as a Chelsea player on a night out in London. A lot of people are having CTD and general instability issues with the game since the last two patches and no solid fix has been mentioned.

Bethehtsda just seem clueless about the game now and the last two patches have just made things worse. The first initial release I find was the most stable, I can't even ALT+TAB back into the game anymore for starters.

Im glad to say i have gone back to vista x64 without issues at all, i was trying to play the game with the latest 7057 windows 7 x64 build and was having the exacty issues you describe, i tried the ffd show fix with no luck.

All i have done with the vista install was to get the latested nvidia drivers (cats if your ati) install those, then install the game, then install the directx9c web update.

This resolved all issues for me. Was playing for 5 hours lastnight without issue. Loving the game. So much attention to detail and things which have been carried over from fallout 1 and 2. Love it :D

Thats also using the latest patch for the game. 1.5 i think??

Hmmm, i pretty much did what you mentioned already datamonkey, so im pretty much at a dead end. Thanks for all the ideas though guys.

Mine was fine until I put on the latest patch, now it crashes fairly regularly, but with no obvious pattern.

Mine was pretty stable but when I installed the patch it became very unstable so I went back to playing without it. Not to mention how they broke VATS in the latest patch.

fallout3.exe stops responding randomly for me.

Faulting application Fallout3.exe, version 1.4.0.6, time stamp 0x4981c35c, faulting module Fallout3.exe, version 1.4.0.6, time stamp 0x4981c35c, exception code 0xc0000005, fault offset 0x007dbc73, process id 0xc14, application start time 0x01c9a553df73c8e5.

VATS has had a delay for me since the first patch I think, it's never been fixed on my game.

What are the details of the FFDshow fix?

ffdshow..change your codec package and also update your graphics drivers drivers...drivers is very important for fallout 3...i get no probelms with this game and im running over 80 mods with it!;)

Id say Fallout 3 is more stable than previous Bethesda games, which seem to be known for their bugs as much as anything else, but its certainly not problem free.

Alt-Tabbing will almost certainly result in a crash (well the interface is compressed into a bar and cant be recovered from).

Usually patches are supposed to reduce errors, but the recent Pitt DLC seems to have added a new problem, a C++ Runtime crash on every exit, which is annoying.

Im also running Vista 64bit. Im not sure the problems experienced with Fallout are due to the OS specifically.

I have to say, for me, the unpatched game was better due to the lack of bugs like the VATS delay and random crashes. However, patches have improved general performance along too, and the nvidia drivers make a big difference.

Just hoping they fix it soon, or there will be little point in me buying any of the DLCs.
