False claims of the "best"?

It was an OCUK link to every thread the OP had made. I'm very confused. I kind of understood when The Halk said that some of my Youtube videos didn't work for him (regions, what can you do, blah blah blah), but this is something else.

Yeah, the weird part was when I went via his profile the url was the same as your link. Does this mean we can't be friends?

no, no, no, no, no

I had this argument on the AV Forums thread. They had a poll for which TV was the 'best' over the last decade  Total nonsense

best? best at what?

Best price, best blacks, best audio, best codec support, best design, best AG filter. Everyone instantly voted the Pioneer Kuro. While this had the best overall picture it did not calculate to have the best value (performance/price ratio). That was the Panasonic Viera. IIRC, the Samsung had the best design.

You can't just say best

I have the best son (meaning the best at football in his class)

What's the best CPU? Instantly everyone on here will say Intel Extreme Edition. Errm, nope. Now add, best for my grandmother just doing her food shopping. Now you will all say something very different.

Best on it's own means nothing

No one genuinely believes that their parents are the best in the world. I have great parents but I'm not so stupid as to think that they are the best ever.

This is how human society works. Read these forums and see how mad a lot of people are with their perception of things. Everyone thinks they are a lot better than they are at pretty much everything.

Go and ask 100 people if they are average, below average or above average in the looks department, intelligence or sports. I think you might find that pretty much everyone is above average which in itself is an oxymoron.

It doesn't make much sense now you've made me think about it,

best dad?

Surely that would not apply to anyone, how can you be the best dad when a person can only have one dad.

Unless your parents have gone through a divorce, and you count non biological fathers.

If you believe everything is literal and absolute then I fear you'll find life to be a very confusing place. For someone to give their dad a card saying "best dad" doesn't necessarily imply that they think their dad is the greatest ever, it's much more simply a recognition and expression of their appreciation towards their father.

Subjective/objective, literal/figurative, relative/absolute - understanding the difference between them helps immensely in social interaction.

Why is it many people will claim that they have the best mother/father/son/daughter etc... when this is most likely not true?

Surely there can only be a single "best" of each member.
But the chances of someone having the "best" member are so slim, that is it necessary to assume these people are liars.

Furthermore, I have seen greeting cards with titles such as "Best Dad", "Best Son" etc... but what confuses me is that there are multiple cards of the same design. Surely if there is a card claiming a "best" member, then only one card of each should be produced? Otherwise it simply does not make sense.

Although I suppose the only exception is that two or more people are at equal levels of greatness. Then it is possible for both/all to be part of the "best".

Technically everyone (well, almost everyone) has only one Mum or Dad therefore they are their best Mum/Dad by default.

So to summarise what everyone else has no doubt said; stop being a douche.

The OP went to a restaurant and was furious to find no amphibious meat in his toad-in-the-hole.

He was even more angry to find out the spotted dick was merely a suet and fruit based pudding in custard.
