Well, a bit of boredom, and another thread got me thinking

Do you or your family members have any compulsions when it comes to buying/driving cars?

eg: my grandad and uncle will now only give positive comments about bmws, all other cars are inferior to them now. my aunt will only drive/buy convertables. my mum only buys japanese and my dad will only by 4x4s now (Usually Discos) and is such now scared when in a smaller car. My other grandparents will only buy volvo estates.

Me, being 19 and only having had my license since may and currently not driving, have no preferences really

Sorry if its too random to grace this fine motors forum

We buy cars we like, irrespective of brand, provided they meet whatever critiera set out at the time. No prejudice againsts brands which is why despite owning two E39 5 Series, we also have an 11 year old Mitsubishi :p

My dad is a big Ford fan and pretty much buys nothing other than Fords. I think his last 4 cars have been Mondeos (a mk1, a mk2, a mk3 estate and now a mk3 hatchback), whilst the cars my mum has had have been a Fiesta, a Ka and now a SportKa.

It's not so much that he thinks all other car manufacturers are inferior or anything like that, it's just that he has had consistently good service throughout owning Fords and they've always been really reliable and performed well. It'd take some really rather bad customer service or a really unreliable purchase to sway him away from Ford now.

Nope, no alliegance here! I just like what I like and wouldn't be loyal to any particular manufacturer.

My dad's the same, his cars vary from an Austin Allegro, to an E30 320i, to mk2 Golf GTI, Rover 75 & currently a Seat Leon with lots more in between. I don't think he'd ever buy a Ford though :D

Like others I buy what I like that fits the bill, just coincidence that the last 2 have been renaults :)

Nah no prefrence with them but they are normaly German.

Dads current Car 996 porsche 4S , previous car Mer Cl
Mums Current Car a Golf previous a golf.

On the otherhand i drive a french car Peugeot. (Its rubbish)

Dad bought whatever was still rolling in the auctions. Although his current Merc is an improvement on the previous Sterlings, Granadas, Xantias (all perfectly serviceable cars, mind).

Mum used to get her cars, via the auctions. Well, just the one actually - after the 2CV she got a Saab 9000 which rocked, trucked on for ages. This was then superseded by a loaned Focus, after which she developed a soft spot for the new 2.7CRD limited Cherokee so now, appropriately, drives one of them :D

Wants an RX8 too :)

As for me, well, I'm sure you all know where my allegiances lie :D

Exciting, rusting, noisy British things :p

Kate's Dad is a Landrover fan, my Mum likes Hondas as her 2 Civics have been amazingly reliable and for her that's the most important factor. I tend to buy anything I fancy on a whim, I think I've owned more Fords than anything.

I was brought up to hate Fords and Vauxhalls - my Dad wouldn't touch Ford's after a 1985 Escort snapped 2 cambelts in 20k. I have however, after 21 years convinced him to at least test drive an ST220. Not sure what his aversion to Vauxhalls stems from - probably blew a few of them up at work.

He's always liked French cars, despite having a troublesome 405 that burned a lot of oil even after some fairly major engine work, and Mazdas as the 2 he's had have been very reliable.

I don't really have any preferences with regards to badge - don't think I'd ever buy a Renault though. I quite like Saabs and Volvos at the moment, although our 9-3 Convertible has been rubbish.
