I need YOU to translate something for me, it's a birthday card and I do not trust them online translators to do this! It's just a few words, won't take a lot of time, I promise :D

Blagodarya!

Unfortunately I can't speak Bulgarian (Magyar) but I believe it translates as:

"Blagodarya" means "thank you"

Magyar is Hungarian - I have just returned from Budapest :p

Yes you're quite correct (Magyar is Hungarian) but the meaning above is "Thank You" in Bulgarian.

It does indeed mean thank you, that's exactly why I placed it in the end of my post :o ;)

:o i've been learning hungarian for a while now and still find it excrutiatingly difficult.

Am I right in assuming you know the language?

If so, how did you find best to learn, everyday i'm attempting to have conversations with a hungarian friend but find the structures of sentences very hard.

edit : en beszel kicsi magyar :(

No, Hungarian was too much for me. The grammar is too alien to me! I even tried to find some decent language courses but failed.

What I did find, however, is that accent did not seem to have much of a bearing on how words sounded, if that makes sense. For example, I could understand words like 'bocsánat' and 'Köszönöm' relatively easily. This did not apply to Mandarin or Spanish when in real life I find it much harder to connect word shape to sounds.

I got by with a mixture of Magyar and English and pointing. A wonderful lady at the hostel also helped out with some basic phrases. The thing that got me was that 'o' and 'a' are reversed!

All said, it is a fantastic city with much to do. Definitely going back sometime soon. The Ginkgo hostel, right in the centre by Ferenciek Tere, is smart and central.

Sounds just like me :p

I went there two years ago ( Lots of family there), stayed for two months, loved every single minute of it, especially the women :o, I have to say, i didn't see a single porker!

The reason im trying to learn bit by bit is so that I feel more comfortable there in future, there seemed to be a lot of decent business prospects there!

Yeah, the younger ladies are pretty cute. As they get older, though, they seem to fill out. Too much Lángos I guess :p

What I did notice was the lack of dog muck on the streets. I have been to a few places, including Geneva, where there seems to be far too much of it. But Budapest? There is none! Props to the poop scoop!

The Széchenyi baths are amazing as well, with the varying steam rooms and saunas. Good grief, the ones at 80˚C are a tad warm.

I went with my gf and mentioned teaching English over there (we are both teachers anyhow) but she has a teenage daughter so it is out of the question :(
