FAO Fox: Buying a E39 530i Sport

A complete overhaul is around £1400.

keeping the 1400 aside is good advice, any sane person wouldn't just fix one of the smaller jobs if it meant taking the box out, have the whole shebang overhauled and be worry free.

unless of course the idea is to get shot of it therefore ignore anything have just had the smaller repair if they command a higher premium

The box itself is excellent and well made. It's just silly things which brings issues in.

I can certainly vouch for this!

I have a '97 528iSE Auto, despite the many issues that are known, I have an example that's been flawless for all of its life - and the high side of 270kmiles!

Whilst its not a cheap car to run by any stretch of the imagination, its build quality defys belief, despite its age & miles, mine - the autobox as well as the car in general- is still smooth & responsive to change up, in "D" "S" or "M" modes.

I've probably tempted fate & will soon experience catastrophic gearbox failure :o, until then, I will wave the flag for a superb gearbox! :)

Edit: whilst I hanker for an e38 740i, I can see a 530i being top of the list to otherwise replace this, which from an ardent e38 fan, says it all about my overall view of the e39 6's.

I think the highest praise I can offer for the E39 is that if mine was written off tommorrow I'd buy another one (Believe me, I've been over this so many times!). There simply isn't anything for £20k or less I'd rather own. I'd like an F10 M Sport (or perhaps an F30 328i M Sport?) but they are still very expensive. So I hope to continue to enjoy the E39 for some time to come :)

Have you or your family owned the car from new?

Fox, great post and certainly not helping my e39 want which will have to wait until I leave Oz at this stage!

However, this part made little sense:

most of the options are either simply 'nice to have', out of date or not particularly challenging to retrofit these days. The only exception to this is leather - you don't want one without leather.

Surely leather is pretty much one of the easiest retrofits?
