did the RS4 community ever get any further with the coking of the inlet manifolds ?

I know we had a massive thread with some guy from america who claimed it was all in your heads, but did you ever get any further into understanding what causes or how to prevent it ?

no what prompted it was talking to the seller who i bought the volvo from. We were talking cars generally as he's a bit of a petrolhead and he mentioned how great the RS4 was selling in the trade. He wants as many of them as he can get his hands on as they sell quick.

Quite surprising really given the view that that housey gave. Was just curious if the problem gets better over time, or if they've found a way to fix it or whatever...

Still an unresolved mystery, and debates as to whether it exists or not.

Apparently, all Direct Injection engines suffer to some degreee

are all these direct injection rs4s on stupid 20k mile service intervals?

yes it is set to long life servicing from the factory although you have the option to put it on a fixed 10k interval.

I don't agree with these intervals. Long life servicing on my Golf means a service every 13.5k ish so I change the oil at 6.5k but still continue with the long life services.

There is no debate around does it exist as they all suffer from it no matter what the American interlooper (i'm being polite) tried to suggest. His argument was around loss of power, he tried to infer that the engine was not showing full power due to being run in 3rd gear and I showed this to be **** as I ran mine in both 3rd and 4th on the last rolling road day I attended and it made zero difference to the numbers. He may be correct about transmission losses and correct calculations, he can't prove it of course but I am always dubious of Rolling Roads, but that never stops an American with a 'fry' on his shoulder. The fact remains all std RS4's seem to be well below the stated BHP when put onto a rolling road and Audi dealers will acknowledge the issue as will well known independents, one of who is providing a work around oil bypass catch tank thingy.

Here's RS4 valves in the UK with only 3700 miles on the engine. The owner used Shell Optimax and V-power fuel, along with Castrol Edge, after purchasing the car with 1200 miles on the odometer:

And here is a different car showing how it goes:

The point I am not clear on is if this issue is causing the power loss, do all RR'd have the wrong calculations for flywheel power or is Audi making a car that fails the trade description act. Getting an answer to this is not something I have looked into too much really, I got bored (I tend to do that) and as mine has been running fine and is plenty quick enough I don't really have the time of inclination to find the truth.

Interesting to hear they are going up in value, seems to be the case from what I hav seen on PH too. It is, for all my light hearted bickering a truly epic road car, better all round by some way than either a C Class AMG or M3 IMHO. May not tick the cool boxes with many (splendid) and may not look as agressive to some, but as a mile munching all road all weather 4 door car I am not sure anything bests it.

so this isnt something specific to RS4s then ?

Interesting.

No it affects all direct injection engines to some degree. BMW, Porsche and VAG all produce them. The 2l TFSI suffers from it to a lesser degree it appears with forced induction it results in far less build up on the valves.

It is a side effect how how the fuel is injected before it was in the inlet manifold so the fuel cleaned the valves on the way into the bores now it doesn't which can result in carbon build up from the oil mist that has entered the air inake via the crank case breather. Your options to completely eliminate the problem are a oil catch tank or vent it to atmosphere.

The RS4 also suffers from very few of the cars making the quoted power output but this is not directly related to the build up on the valves it has been said however over time it can reduce the engines power output further.

I have mine serviced inside, around 14-16K but to be honest it should be 10K really even thoug Audi say 20K. Car is a different beast after a service, 20K would be utter madness.

obviously the sort of person to dyno their car is the sort of person to talk to people about why its happenning. hence dealers wont have much comeback.

I suspect they are popular in the trade as the vast majority of owners (or prospective owners) are simply blisfully un-aware of the fact there car is making less than quoted power.

Evo did a buygers guide a few issues ago and again made no mention of it !

That's a shame, I seem to remember Mazda offering full refunds on the RX8 in America when they got busted for grossly inflating its performance figures.

This cannot be right I heard once that the RX8 was basically a Formula 1 car?

It is supposed to be a good car but they are hardly super cars! They only have 230ish BHP, Mazda USA originally tried claiming they were more like 260ish.

If it's that bad, they should be fitted with catch tanks from the factory which should be checked along with everything else come service time.

Got one on yours, Housey?

It goes quicker than 95% of the things on the road, don't REALLY care if it's a few horses down as long as they are all the same, which they are. Someone eleses fight, not really bothered in spending weeks pulling together data and then a legal case with Audi. I got my warranty paid by Audi as a gesture for my pain, I could probably have got more but sometimes battles are not worth the effort.
