Hi,

For £2k you can build a stupidly cool socket 775 quad core system that will get you by until Intel's Octacore's (OC'able to 5Ghz on air) arrive, along with Quadruple channel memory (4x4gb=16gb). Add this to the Wondows 8 128bit Royalty operating system thats on the cards and you will be laughing at the usual i7 stuff. Facebook will have people looking like they are hitting Mach 3, steam will run like a pressure cooker and well Myspace, more like your universe. As for games, well they will run so fast you will be able to dodge bullets like in the matrix!

Peoples view that for gaming the GPU is the only thing that is needed is absolute nonsense, as the CPU does a hell of a lot of mathematical calculations for gaming. I know for a fact that if I gave you a hardware configuration with an i5 then replaced it with an i7, in modern games you will be looking at about 70-100% improvement on FPS.

Those who go for SLI or Crossfire are stupid as this gives you about 15-20% improvement for £300!!! For £100 CPU upgrade on games you could get 70-80%! Im not saying the CPU does more than the GPU, or that a good GPU is not needed as it is, but people need to understand how much work the CPU does in a modern game!

Pah! CPU and GPU are both over-rated, if you want to play the seriously demanding RPGs of the future you need a decent MPU (moral processing unit) to cope with the increasingly complex branching story-lines, and don't get me started on the current lack of native, on-die, "FaceBook acceleration co-processor support", given the amount of money currently being spent on facebook games this has to be where the hardware developers concentrate their attention! Only a matter of time before stuff starts coming out with the "The way it's meant to be Tweeted" splash screen for those lucky enough to have proper hardware support for today's gruelling apps.

The obvious choice for a CPU/GPU balanced system is a 980x with a 4870. You could swap the 980x for an i5 but you wouldn't get the 70-100% boost in performance than an i7 would bring you.
