Hi Martin,

I did email you a few days ago but haven't had a response. I was wondering how much it costs you (and where you get them done) to mount your pictures? I'm thinking of the ones in the nails.

I went to niche and they quoted me £12.50 per 16"x12" (they described it as a conservation mount) + £2.50 to have it shrink wrapped. I day say I could get them to cut the price a bit if I were to like 10 at a time, but for the moment I've only given them a couple to see how they come out.

Paul

I'm not exactly sure what kind of mounting you're referring to, but £15 for mounts, backs and wrapping sounds fairly expensive at that size. My regular contract rates cost me around each £4 for mount, back and sleeve for 10x7" prints, and the occassion 35x25" mount weighs in just less than £18.
That said, I am on my framer's books as a regular and am subject to a minimum yearly spend to secure those rates.

Hi Paul; apologies, but did not get your email? I have a friend who does mine. Those prices are quite high so would advise shopping around to find something a bit cheaper. As neverender has said above, to get cheaper rates you will need to be a regular or buy in bulk.

Another question for you, when you number the pictures and you say 1/50

What's the intention of that is that just 1/50 of the batch, then if you print another batch of 50 you start at 1 again?

The ones you have seen are each a limited run of 50 prints. After that, there are no more for sale. I will just replace with another image. If I envisaged selling greater quantities, then I would increase the initial run amount. The ones being sold through my website are included in this figure. I think only one person should have the right to the 1/50, not every time you decide to sell a new batch.

Hope that helps.

right ok get it. I've been doing some costs, I went back to the shop and asked what options they could give me for a 16" x 12" mount

Cost per unit I work out to be (includes price of print and delivery of print)

£5.89 If I were to buy the mount and try to mount it myself, bound to screw this up though!
£10.39 If I were to go for a medium quality mount, apparently not so good for photos in the long run.
£14.89 For a conservation mount, from what I understand this is effectively some sort of double mount, in fairness the quality is really very very good in the two I've just had done.

If I become a regular customer I should be able to get another 10% discount off of the cost of the mount.

Edit (again): think I might go the unlimited route for now so I'm not tied to printing/mounting a certain number of editions at a time. If I ever become well known (I can but dream :p) then I'll consider limited editions a la Joe Cornish.
