I've been in IT since 1987 and I've done many things from coding in different languages, performance testing, project management, support, running support areas, design, etc. I used to love the industry and actually looked forward to coming into work. It gave me a real purpose and in the early days it was a wonderful, unregulated, area to work in. I've always been paid very well and still get paid very well for what I do.
However, if I could start again I would. I don't regret going into IT but I wish I had got out of it 10 years ago. I now have too many commitments and can't afford to change. But the industry around me is changing rapidly. I seem to be doing ok as I am keeping one step ahead of the tidal wave of offshoring. Most people who work for me are Indian nationals including almost everyone working for me in the UK.
Don't get me wrong, they work very hard indeed but I would really, very strongly, recommend anyone considering the industry today, to look elsewhere. If you are new into the industry then you will struggle to compete against the cheap Indian and east European labour (my last place had a tech centre in Lithuania) and again struggle to compete against the Brits who are still in the industry and have significant experience. You should be ok if you already have experience but if not then you will be competing on price and that's a battle you'll probably lose.
Loved it back in the 90's though
