FAO: People who live in Somerset

Yeovil is nice enough but a about as far from the coast as you get in Somerset - tho does put you in decent enough range of either South or North coast but not really near either. Jobs wise its not great although Westlands is apparently taking on a shed load of new jobs over the next few years, in a wide variety of areas, for some big upcoming contracts. Can get into Bristol fairly quickly or to the South coast on the train but its a good 40 minutes to Bridgewater.

That can only come down as a plus!

Yeovil is a nice place to live and there are plenty of amenities to fit/fill the majority of needs.

I live on the west side (Abbey Manor near the football club) and can't really fault it.

One major plus for Yeovil is that house prices are quite competetive - you get more for less. The villages just outside of Yeovil; West Coker, Odcome, East Coker, Montecute are also very nice, although somewhat more expenesive.

As with any medium / large town you will have nice areas and rougher areas although Yeovil seems better than most places I have visited in the county.

I'll let them know about the areas you've mentioned :) When we went to Yeovil we didn't really see it all apart from the outer areas when we went to the garage to pick up my Dad's new car and that was about it.

I wouldn't mind living there, as there seems to be quite a nice link to places and plenty of places to live, along side having either north or south to go for the beaches, as it's sort of in the middle.

I haven't read the whole thread so sorry if this had already been said, but costal areasof Somerset are a little limited on the job options and internet is generally slow, also mobile phone coverage is bad around Minehead, Watchet and Wilton. As someone said you are better off at wsm.

Most jobs in Somerset are close to m5 and Taunton area.

To be honest if your parents are after a south west sea side area with good job prospects and can also offer the whole mainstream shops and urban living then i would suggest torbay. Area such as Paignton, torquay, brixham, babbacombe etc as this area is quite self contained & exeter and plymouth can be reached within 30mins.

I'm not really sure what they fully want, but from what I've gathered they just want to be closer to the coast than where we currently are, as it takes around 1/2hours depending on traffic to get to the nearest beach from here. So I think anywhere around Taunton / Yeovil will be good places to choose, from what people have said they seem to be the good areas. Although we won't exclude moving further south.

The Rising Sun Inn - I thought it was the only pub? :o

The Riser - More of a restaurant with a bar - nice enough though and I have a friend who lives close by

Hello,

We're looking to move down South, and the Parents like Somerset, and they would like to be nearer the coast if possible.

I'm just wondering what are the areas to avoid and what are the nice areas? It doesn't have to be near any schools, just not too far from job opportunities (for the parents, I'm at Uni) and close-ish to shops etc.

They like the look of Bridgwater, Williton, Watchet and the Burnham on sea / Berrow areas from what they've looked at so far.

Also is there good internet service around the areas :p

Cheers :)

What sort of job opportunities - IT?

Bridgwater is always slated and I don't particularly think much of it. Williton is OK but its a very small town (I was schooled there) and has some deprived areas. Watchet always used to have a poor reputation but has become far better in the last 10 years and is touristy but is on the coast. Burnham on sea doesn't have that good a reputation but I don't know too much about it or Berrow for that matter. I would look more towards Taunton.

Internet speeds are improving but apart from the odd exception its only good in the major towns

Currently my Mum works as a carer, and Dad works in Wisemans Dairys, but he'd rather be in a more of a management position like he used to be.

Yeah, I think Taunton is one of our favourites now, the area seems nice and the houses are good.

I don't think it's all about being right on the coast anymore, I think they just want to be a lot closer than we are now :)

Burn ham on sea and Bridgewater ha-ha avoid those at all costs.

I wouldn't move to some rest to go to a crappy town. Get down there on Holliday and explore all the little villages.

Bath is in Somerset ;).

Is that a hint ;)

Burnham is off the list as well then :p

We used to go to Brean every year for our holiday, so we've pretty much been to most of the areas around there :)

I know there's Google, but if anyone is in the Taunton / Yeovil area could you list a few estate agents names please? I'm going to keep using Google, but would be nice for a few to be listed. Much appreciated :)

In Yeovil:

- Mann
- Connells (largest)
- Greenslade
- Fox & Son
- Novahomes
- Lacies
- Chants
+ a few more small independant ones who look after the larger properties - large land purchases / homes more than £1 million etc.

All on the same road as well :p

Clevedon /thread.

But seriously forget Bridgewater. There are quite a few nice places on the other side of the Motorway from Taunton such as Ilminster, Chard, Axminster etc.

Personally I would looking around Westbury, Trowbridge, Warminster, Chew Magna, Blagdon, Claverham and Clevedon.

Westbury, warminster trowbridge - all **** holes. Try BOA, Devizes, or the Wilts/somerset villages.

Chew magna / blagdon , clevedon yes.

Avoid Yeovil, its the scrotum of the south west.

Theres a LOT of worst places its far from the Scrotum of the South West. Generally its pretty decent aslong as you avoid a couple of areas, tho theres not a huge amount to do but you can easily hop on a train and get to places with more to do.

Care to elaborate?

Most people have said it's an alright area.

It has a terrible one way system, walking down the highstreet it is spot the teenage mother and the chav partner.

It's a rough as **** and unless you want a career in yoghurt then your children will be pregnant by the time they are 15

It really is a hole, id rather live in the gaza strip.
