fast/sporty diesel for around 4k ?

id say that if youre not doing insane mileage id rather get a good petrol engine because there are so many people who go "woah, diesel mpg and torque" and hence you have to pay such a premium for one.

i got a 2000 1.8t with loads of extra and that cost me £2k. the equivalent diesel would cost more than double that and even though the 1.8t is no fire cracker, id much rather than over a diesel

More than double you say? AT is showing 2 diesel golfs for between £4k and £5k that are 2000 or earlier. Same criteria for a £2k - £3k budget returns 57 cars.:confused:

SAAB 9-3 TiD 150? anything from 2004 - 2006 could be had mileage depeneding. I personally think they are not too bad looking cars. I know they basically have the same chassis as a Vectra but they don't feel like a vectra to drive, and their interior is pretty decent too.

Anyone want to comment on why this would be a poor choice? Only ask because I quite these cars (although I'd go for the petrol version) and you do seem to get a decent enough car for the money???

I'm confused again. You've posted a link where the most expensive car isn't even nearly 'more than double' your 1.8t?

when i bought it, last May, there was a large price differential, the diesel ones are a big premium over petrol ones, so whichever way you look at it the diesel car is the wrong car to be buying

if you look at the link though, ive limited the search to £2.5k so ive posted up the wrong search

Thanks for the bump Edd, seems no one is that interested in Saabs, looks like it's either got to be VAG group BMW or a Mondeo before most people on OCUK take any interest.
I like the SAAB's cos they are different from the usual stuff, just as reliable as the VAG offerings (in my experience) and well spec'd for the money.

An example of what I think is a decent looking SAAB, not that sure about the wheels but you get the idea. You'd get lower miles than that mind u even in budget.

I have bought and sold a couple of the 9-3,s they are lovely cars and although based on the vectra they are a lot nicer.

I used to have a 9-3 2.0 Aero and sold it to another member on here. Loved it, it's not that solid and feels a little cheap... but it was very chaep, had a fair few toys and looked good. I might even get another.

hmm, getting a petrol and just dealing with the extra fuel costs might be an idea!
I've never spent much on cars but theyve always been older sportier things so at least they were fun, stumping up decent money on a boring car aint good :(

I've got a Passat tdi 130 sport. Nice luxurious car with plenty of torque. A little bit sporty (imho). May not be quite fast enough for you though. Perhaps have a look around some traders and take some test drives?

Its a rubbish engine in a cheap feeling car, that's not as good to drive as a mondeo or as reliable as a 1.9 VAG TDI. It has inflated parts and servicing costs and the only things going for it are comfy seats, unassuming looks and newish for the money.

Whats rubbish about the engine ? The parts prices are actually quite reasonable.
