Behind you... Naked!
As the title.

Just been fannying about with Kubuntu 7.10 64Bit and its quick fair play.

Im not an ubuntu fan however, or rather not a DEBIAN fan anyway, but its good, and I like it... a lot.

Im about to grab xubuntu 32bit to try out on my LapTop but whats the fastest distro out there at this time?

Gentoo has been a good distro in the past for me but not tried it recently.

Gentoo when I first started dabbling with it, was certainly a speed demon.
I think IIRC that it was on a K6-500 that I first tried out Gentoo and it took me over 3 weeks to get KDE compiled and running on it, but when it was done, it was really quick.

Recently however, I have felt that it has gone the way that all linux distros have gone, and thats an overly bloated OS... It seems that they are all doing the LIVECD way these days with the option to xfer it to HD fulltime.

Saying that 5% is 5%, so, gentoo it is then.

Cheers BTI

Arch Linux is pretty fast too. Just a light base and then you add only what you want.

base+fluxbox flies.

I did try Arch a while back. Im sure that it didnt work for me, so I will have another play.

Been toying with xubuntu on the laptop earlier on, and kubunu on a real PC... Both 7.10

have come up on a few issues with kubuntu in that I cannot for the life of me install or remove anything? It keeps failing to do anything of the kind which is a pain.

xubuntu is another funny one in that the PCMCIA LanCard kind of seems to work, but the thing cannot find a network. Now, this has been exactly the same issues as with windows, so Im not realyl too bothered at this time, because that card ( Cable & Wireless using the RALINK 2500 Chip it seems ) has always been a pain, but even though I have bought 3 or 4 others that are great, I somehow lose them and this one I keep finding???

Anyway, xubuntu is definitely a nice choice at this time. I have got gentoo ready t otry out shortly and I will grab an updated arch shortly then.

Many thanks again.

Well, Im new to Ubuntu, but its the built-in application installer.

Few thigns I want to get rid of, include OpenOffice ( I have bought StarOffice ) and some things I want in such as xmms ( Well, you use what you're used to ) and they just wont go in.

I mean, it tried it really does and I think that some things went in, im sure they did in fact, but only at first, and these were some dependancies.

Now, no matter what I try to put in, seems like it will break something or other and it fails to install or remove anything?

I have not tried to use the CLI for this... I know I should but I have never really tried all that apt get make install stuff... I have always sides with simple rpm

<offtopic>I don't use *buntu - but is the package management not based on .deb files rather than rpm?</offtopic>

Code:
# apt-get install $PACKAGE_OF_YOUR_CHOICE
# apt-get remove $PACKAGE_YOU_DONT_WANT

don't need to bother with
Code:
$ ./configure
$ make
# make install
with binary packages.

apt-get is DEB based yes.

I have always sided with Mandrake ( Since v4 ) and I have always used rpm

rpm -i package

Easy as pie.

Ok, so apt-get install "package" is just as easy, so I will be playing with that later on, but I was under the impression that we still needed to apt get configure make install bendover etc

ok, so with kubunto 7.10, I want to get rid of OpenOffice... How will I go about this?

And while Im here, how about installing xmms?

Surely sudo apt-get install xmms

will only install the base xmms wont it?

Again, I need to look into these deeper.

I used to love Mandrake... Up till v10, it worked flawlessly, but since v10 and now as Mandriva, its gotten bloated and has stopped working. OpenSUSE is a good un but thats to is bloated and slow... Especially compared to this ubuntu.

Im going to have to move to DEBIAN based distros I just know it, and Im only having teething issues I think?

or for arch...

Code:
# pacman -Sy $PACKAGE
or
Code:
# makepkg -i
if you're using abs (which is kind of like ports - but not quite as good)

Ok, still going through a few distros... Still trying to settle down with one.

Right, SABAYON

Came across this and I remembered a mate mentioned it as its got Beryl already in there and requires no setting up, I tried to D/L a later version of it and its not coming via torrent however the version I have already is v3.4 which seems to be the latest version anyway.

I chucked it onto a test box, thats got 6600GT in it and its very very very quick... I have tried to put to disk to install properly, however, its kind of stuck in 800x600 and I cannot see the whole of the window... Cant know if Im selecting NEXT, or CANCEL or whatever?

Could be down to the Monitor - its a poo one although it does do 1024x768

Anyway, I remember the last time I ran SABAYON it was not very reliable, however this time, in the little piddling about that I have done, it seemed to be fine.

The thign is, that SABAYON is GENTOO based is it not? ( Well, yes it is, I know it is, Im only verifying it with myself there )

Anyway, I m going to throw it on my daughters PC in a few minutes ( Just copying the Disk just in case as its the only one I have and the torrents are not coming you see )

In the mean time, just in case, is there any way to alter the desktop size on the Sabayon LiveCD? - I have got the Deksotp config obviously, but the max it lets me go to is 800x600... I need 1024x768 minimum just to install to HD you see...

Thanks.

Correct - Sabayon in a Gentoo fork.

Once it's booted, edit xorg.conf and restart the x server. Ok - this is a temp workaround... but if you're planning on installing, that doesn't matter.

Although I have never used Sabayon, I assume that it has the same install options that Gentoo does (e.g. a gtk install script as well as the ncurses based one)

Does that work on a live distro??? - I have always assumed not??

If it does, then Im going to feel a bit of a prat arent I?

Yes, Sabayon is, AFAIK the exact same as Gentoo in every way and yes, gtk and ncurses.

LOL... Last time I tried out a gentoo setup, I knew nothign about Linux ( Not that I know a million things more now to be fair ) but when I did, the keys that got broken on my KeyBoard were "M" "A" and "N"... Cant think why? LOL

Actually, I have also tried it on another PC and it just hung, I took it to a few of my PCs and its a bit iffy on a number of them.

Only PC it has run fine on, weirdly enough is the Opteron 175 PC thats running a pair of 6600GT cards... Im a bit miffed that it wont run or runs buggy as buggery on so many others though?

Where does Sabayon store its xorg.conf file?

Doesnt seem to have one?

Anyway, perhaps found a partial cure... I selected the metisse desktop and the install bit does show me the icons enough to select them... Only issue I had at first was that it failed as it needed me to format the swap partitions off the current ( KUBUNU 7.10 ) setup on that PC.

It seems to be going now though.

It should work!

I doubt that a live disk would have an up to date mlocate db, so
Code:
# updatedb
 locate xorg.conf

If it doesn't have one, then from a terminal:
Code:
# x -configure
and start the DM ;)

After all - / is mounted on a ram disk and is therefore r/w :)

I've also been looking at Sabayon recently and think I'm going to install it on one of my / partitions to try it out :)
