My girlfriend's on contract with T-Mobile until Jan 2008, but T Mobiles coverage is pants and their billing department was less than helpful when her card details were stolen.

Now her Nokia's being a pig and she wants a new phone. She could renew her contract with T-Mobile and get a free upgrade (you can do this after 12 months of the 18 month contract), but really she wants to get away from T-Mobile altogether - and she doesn't want to have to wait until Jan 2008 to do it.

So is there anything she can do to get a new phone with someone else? Can you escape a contract early anyhow?

She's on the £25/month "Flext" thing with a Nokia 6111.

no

unfortunately a contract is a contract, and usually the only way to get out of a contract is to buy your way out of it and pay all the remaining line rental.

I think you will find that she will have to wait until she is in the last month of her 18 month contract before she can do the upgrade, if she could do it within the 12 months then its not much point being an 18 month contract...

nah im sure they allow you to upgrade after 12 months, i remember them saying something about it. But the catch is an extra 18 months contract when your current one ends, which would keep her on t mobile until 2 years from now..!

Nope its the last month of the 18, have rang them and just asked as im also waiting for my last month for a new phone.

Working for a mobile company myself (Orange) on a 18 month contract you can upgrade your phone after 15 months, depending on how much you spent etc you can either pay a small upgrade fee or some can upgrade without a fee, if you leave it right to the end however you tend to get better loyalty rewards etc.

And to the op, no offence but it doesn't sound like T-Mobile did anything wrong, every company would have treated you the same, you shouldn't leave on that basis alone, if their signal is crap thats another matter.

I was in the same position, got fed up with T-Mobile, coverage at work is just shocking, i've been with them since March last year but this weekend decided to do something about it. I was on flext35 and have now downgraded to their £15 a month evening and weekend only service. I wont be using the sim anymore anyway so needed it as cheap as possible.

went into O2 and got a nice deal, well I think on a new phone. Got an 8800 Sirocco on their £35 a month contract for free. 600 mins, 500 texts a month with free calls all weekend.

Phone is lovely, service is great at work and i'm happy. I've got to phone t-mobile in Aug to cancel my contract but a few months of paying £15 is worth it imho.

The whole account details nicked thing was more complex than that but im on a mobile so wont text the whole palava in here! The main reason is signal though.

Nice one foning them up :-) dunno why i thought you could upgrade after 12 months then!

Im thinking, get a sim free phone to replace the 6111 till the contract ends, then get a new contract + free fone and sell the sim free.

Do many places do 12 month contracts now?

I'm not sure about third party dealers (Carephone Warehouse, Phones 4U etc) but the main companies still do 12 month contracts although they suck for mins/texts compared to 18 month ones.

just ring them and cancel it now? it will cost you somewhere around the amount you are going to pay anyway, just gets it over and done with.

virgin do some good deals on their website. Just swapped over from flext 35 to the virgin £30 contract (400min 600txt). its only 12months and minutes and txts role over :D

T-mobile and Orange are just shocking where I work. They barely work outside let along inside. With o2 I can be sitting at my desk, phone in my pocket and still have 2 bars, scientifically tested of course :D

With tmobile you can downgrade your contract after 12 months but you have to wait for 18 until you can get your phone changed as mentioned above. I've just got my line rental down to half price for the last 6 months of my contract after which, I'm moving to a network that I can actually make a phone call with. Their coverage is bloody apalling.
