Havent even had the machine running more than 24 hours yet. I was just resarting after installing drivers, heard a pop and the fuse had gone downstairs for the upstairs plugs.

No power getting to the MB (no green light, so i assume its PSU). What the new PC is:

Liberty 500 W
Asus (the conroe wifi one)
1900xt (his 512mb)
2 gb geil hx
2 250 Gb HDs
Dvd-rw
Audigy 2 eX

What are the chances that this PSU has ****** over all of the components? I know i can RMA the PSU, but if it has destoryed everything else with it, can i charge energmax for the replacement parts?

Im very annoyed. So much for spending $$$ for a quality PSU..... Didnt even get to finish installing drivers, let alone overclock......

If the other parts are dead and in warranty then just warranty them as well and dont say your psu took them out.

Typical, was next in the queue and OcUK have closed the phone lines to finish for the day :(

PMSL

Surely they should close the queue then deal with the remaining customers in the queue before closing the lines!

You would think :p

I got cut off half way through a conversation. It must be on a timer. :)

Stupid question, but have you tried changing the power lead incase the fuse in the lead has blown?

Good point there. Friend of mine spent a whole week trying to work out what was up with his PC after a pop. He had been using the same power lead with all the PSUs he tried and not once did he think to check the fuse :p

Iv done this as well, 2 hours i spent, changed the power cable - did nothing, changed it again, it worked ! doh :D

I did a bit more than 2 hours. I bought a new PSU. Tested it - nothing. Put old PSU in, tested it - nothing. RMAed new PSU. Bought new motherboard, CPU graphics card and RAM (Going from A64 3700, 2GB 3200, X800 AGP to sig stuff). Tested it - nothing. Was well frustrated. Changed power lead, and wham! Turned on and everything went well. Tested my old Mobo CPU and graphics card, and voila they worked too lol. Was a costly experience.

Now they're in my parents computer :D

LOL. The fuse was the first thing i checked. I've tried to cables and they both work fine with a different comp, but not in this.

If a PSU is dead, would it damage anything if i hook it up to power a different PC? I was thinking of just putting the P4 (4 pin) and the block (20?) pin connection in to my old PC (P4) to see if it would work. But could this damage my old PC?

As i said that i realised there was a 450mhz P3 machine in front of me that is scrap bar the HD. Just hooked it up (it only had the `block` MB connector) and with it connected absolutely nothing happened. Even without the HD + CD drives powered I`m guessing the CPU fan should spin up and it try to post. But it was dead, so at least that is confirmed.

I'm assuming you have another PSU on hand.

Why don't you try testing your components with the spare individually. You can turn the PSU without the motherboad on by shorting a green and black wire together on the ATX cable to test things like fans, drives, and other peripherals.

Try it and see what happens.

I have an older 300 W PSU. It doesnt have all the pins for connecting to the motherboard though (thinks its short by 4 at one end). If i hook this up to just the MB + CPU to see if it powers up, would it be okay?

I would wait for a proper replacement psu. There's no point in gambling with your new kit, and that 300w psu could blow and take out a few components with it, then you'd be really Please use full stars next time.

I'd fully star that sweary out mate :) You quoted it numpty.

Is the power cable plugged into a surge protecter btw? If there has been a surge there is a chance it has taken out the plug socket in the surge protector since they are individually fused.

Pretty much the same thing happened to me recently.

My Pc just turned itself off, checked the fuse box and the upstairs fuse had tripped. Turned it back on and the pc failed to boot - nothing, no power to fans etc. I assumed the PSU had died (enermax liberty 620w) so I replaced that and now got 4 led's on DFI ultra mobo.

After a lot of swapping and changing here is the list of the dead components.

Mobo, Ram, PSU, GFX, CPU, DVD, XFI card all dead. The only things surviving were my HD's and the data on them was fine too - even in raid 0!

To say I was gutted aswell as frustrated at the fault finding was an understatement. I will never trust an enermax PSU to protect my components again even though it was supposed to have a lot of protection with it. In hindsight I should have used a surge protector but I never had one problem without one in the years I've been building pc's, I do now!

Hope your luck is better than mine.

Spend hundreds of pounds on PC parts then fail to spend about £10 - £20 on a surge protector, lol........

We have surge protectors for every PC in our house, no excuse not to when you can't afford to lose the hardware connected to it.

The great thing about them is a lot of them come with hefty guarantees, so anything lost connected to a surge protector, if it happens, will be backed up by a nice pay out by the manufacterer of the surge protector.
