No thread around, so might as well start one.

The FIBA World Cup in Japan is in full swing, with the second match day coming to conclusion today.

Some of the surprises on the first day: Puerto Rico pushed the US hard to the wire and the US won a close-fought game 111-100.

Argentina beat France (who were missing Tony Parker) 80-70, Italy demolished Jao Ming's China 84-69 and Turkey just clinched victory over Lithuania 76-74.

As for surprises on the second day, Italy beat Slovenia 80-76, and France beat Serbia 65-61. Finally, twice European Champions Greece reiterated their ambition to do well in this world cup and beat tournament favourites Lithuania 81-76. Lithuania are now in trouble having lost 2 matches in a row. Later today, the US play China.

Further updates to be posted :)

It's actually quite good to watch live, watched the Nicks in MSG. Well.... the cheerleaders were good anyway :p

who has the US taken?

They didnt take hardly anyone to the Olympics, they were all scared of terrorism.

No Kobe, Shaq or Vince. All they had was AI, and he cant be expected to carry the entire team for mroe than a few minutes at a time. I think Carmello was the one who was sposed to come into his own, didnt look that impressive when I saw.

China are a little disappointing, Yao is usually a pretty good leader, him and Tracy McGrady are a good partnership.

And to everyone else, basketball is good. Evidently all those who were moaning about it just never got any good at it and would prefer to go play 65 a side football outside. Thats well better.

Germany lost to Spain 92-71  What's up Dirk?

The US roster is as follows:

Joe
JOHNSON

Kirk
HINRICH

Lebron
JAMES

Antawn
JAMISON

Shane
BATTIER

Dwyane
WADE

Chris
PAUL

Chris
BOSH

Dwight
HOWARD

Brad
MILLER

Elton
BRAND

Carmelo
ANTHONY

Hardly a world-beating team, sporting a Suns reject and just 1 all-star :/

Match Report for the China game.

2 superstars I'd say, D-Wade is coming along nicely.

Still though,do you know why none of the others have gone? Surely its their choice and not the selection

No Shaq, Vince, AI, McGrady, Kobe, not even anyone like Mourning or Rasheed.

Not really a worthwhile contest really, seein as its not their best players, USA would walk it if they took the All Star lineup.

Todays games, and China has lost again, this time 87-90 to Puerto Rico.

Lithuania record their first victory of the tournament over....Qatar, winning 106-65.

Italy defeat Senegal 64-56, and European Champions Greece underline their ambitions by winnning their third match 72-69 against Australia.

Turkey go level with Greece in the group after squeezing a 73-71 victory over Brazil and Slovenia battle but ultimately lose to the US 114-95.

Rather than take a bunch of superstars who aren't a team, the USA has been concentrating on building a team instead. At least that's what they said on ESPN :p

Err, Lithuania are 4th in the world rankings! That gives them much legitimacy in my eyes, plus they always play well in major tournaments, they have good players etc.

FIBA Rankings

I know lithuania are a decent team, but my point was USA were pre-tournament favourites, not them :)

Greece are in the final after beating the USA :D :D :D :D :D

On Sunday we play the winner of Spain vs. Argentina. Should be a great watch! Where in England could I watch it though???

Jammy ****er's they are those Greeks, first Euro2004 and now beating the American b-ball team. Mind you looking at the roster of the Americans, its hardly world beating...put Shaq, Kobe and a few other superstars in there and im sure they would have spanked the Greeks out of the court hehe.

Dont know where your going to be able to catch the match tbh, havent seen it being shown on sky or any other sports channel, must admit i havent checked eurosport though.

i watched the match , the US team can hardly be called a team...yes they have fantastic players but only this. On the other side the greek team , fantastic , imho the best team in the world :)
