Hi all,

One of the front calipers has seized on our Fiesta Mk5 1.25.

I will call around various suppliers tomorrow but just wondering what you would do.

Would you repair them? Replace them? New or Refurbished?
Which suppliers would you recommend and any idea on cost?

The discs and pads were replaced last year, the seized wheel got quite hot so possibly the pads have got very hot too. What's the test to see if the pads are ok? If they're not OK, are they only fit for the bin?

Also, the flexi brake hoses need replacing so will do these at the same time. Where is best for these?

Ideally would like to get the parts tomorrow and can then work on the car over the weekend.

Thanks.

You can buy them refurbished. They cost £65 but if you take the old unit back you'll get £25 back. The flexi hoses won't need replacing but I would look at replacing discs and pads as a binding calliper turned my brake disc blue :D

I would recommend taking the old calliper with you if at all possible as there are a few revisions and no one really knows what's what.

The hoses are a little perished with age so were already on my To Do list.

The binding was intermittent and caught early. A visual check of the brake disc through the alloy looks ok. I will take the disc off for further inspection, any tips on checking for warped discs? It's a solid disc.

Thanks for the input.

The flexi hoses are sided and a pair will cost you £15. Make sure the new hoses have all the correct bracketry included. Pick up a bit of DOT 4 fluid as you'll need to bleed once finished. Get a thick plastic bag and tighten it down with the reservoir cap to help minimise loss/stop air getting into the system but I'm sure you're aware of that already :)

Thanks for the tip re: bracketry. Have you ever replaced any, where did you get them? Ford?

There is a Ford trade parts counter in Bristol so will give them a call tomorrow.

Ford may not have them, I need to replace mine as they were on the advisory sheet at MOT time but haven't done so yet. ECP have them in stock and looking at the image, the brackets are included.

Repair kit on Fleabay is £30, I don't see a motorfactors being a great deal cheaper. I'd rather have a new caliper and be done with it.

how much are fiesta calipers?

mine would have been £260 all in for replacements.. which wasn't quite necessary.

Personally I would hate putting a new thing on one side, and leaving the other old. I have ocd though :p

Oh, I'll be doing both sides unless cost is extortianate.

Put new cylinders on the rears last year so replacing the calipers and hoses should see the system good for a while.

Janesy, where did you get your calipers?

asuming the mk5 fezza has the same hubs as my puma why dont you just get some calipers off a mk3 mondeo and 300mm discs off a focus st170 and hey presto- you have a break setup that will never fade and all for less than 120 quid :)

Called around a few of the local motor factors.

Calipers are coming in at about £46 a piece.

Flexi hoses about £40-£50 a set, does that seem right? Fronts are costing more than the rears.
Checking ebay braided set is £50 so would expect regular rubber hoses to be a fair bit less?!

GSF have the fronts at £12.15+VAT each.
The rears are out of stock so Partco carry them at £6.74+VAT each.
About £38 in total.

Is there anything wrong with Lucas calipers? Are they to be avoided?

Bit more calling around and found calipers at £25 a piece and hoses at just under £40.
Will collect it all at the same place too. Don't think I will have time to get the old caliper off so touch wood and all that!

Picked up brake engineering parts.

Just would like some info on things to check if the binding has ruined the existing pad and disc? As said the pads were smoking and the disc glowing orange!

The disc will turn blue if it has been heated excessively. As for the pads, they'll probably fall to pieces when you take them out :p For the price you can get discs and pads for, it's well worth doing.
