The Fiesta had it's MOT yesterday and failed on a few points. The long and short of it is that I need the following parts:

CV Boot kit x 2 - £5 ea
Caliper - £40
Front Brake Pads - £14
Front Brake Discs - £13.50 ea
Brake Drum - £30

The Nearside caliper was binding slightly and this caused uneven wear at the front and bluing of the disc which is why all the friction parts need replacing at the front.

One CV boot was leaking grease slightly and the other is on it's way out so I might as well replace both. One of the brake drums is slightly scored so I'm figuring that's why the handbrake efficiency wasn't all that.

Do these prices seem ok? The Pads and Discs seem cheap but I don't really have much idea of how much a caliper or CV boot kit should cost. Would I need any other parts when replacing the CV boot or caliper?

Providing I can get hold of a joint splitter all the jobs will be done by me/my dad.

Nationwide wanted £250 just to replace one CV boot and a caliper, no thanks :p I asked them if they could quickly adjust my rear brakes whilst they had the drums off (part of a free brake check) and they wanted £40 just for that :/

And before anyone shouts me down for getting a cheap MOT from Nationwide, I made them put the car up on the ramp and got them to substantiate all the faults before I drove away.

Over £100 to get through an MOT? Use the scrappage scheme get rid of that shed and spend thousands of pounds on a car that wont cost you £100 every mot.

;)

You're right! I'll get one of those VW Fox things for £150 a month so I don't have to shell out £100 getting my car past an MOT and I can pay less tax! That's a marvellous idea!

To be fair, once the car passes an MOT I'll be trading it in for a 2.0 Focus, maybe a Ghia, mmmmmmmmmm plastic wood

You could just buy a chavved up newer Fiesta.

Wait, hang on...

New discs and pads. you'll need to remove the caliper anyway to change the disc.

CV boot, To change these is it required to remove the drive shafts? unless you use the split down the side type, which you 'clip together and glue up' ?

No I'm not getting the split type, that repair wouldn't even last 5 mins. I won't be taking the driveshaft out, I'll probably do it at the hub and and split the CV joint.

Mmmm shiny new parts. All the parts including the CV boots came to £100 and when I return the old caliper I'll get £20 cash in return. Pretty happy considering it's all good stuff.

I'd probably have just free'd the caliper off or got a decent second hand one, but 40 quid's not bad for a new one really. Wouldn't have thought the slight scoring in the brake drum would cause the low efficiency, more likely it's just needs the brake dust blowing out and cleaning and the shoes adjusting properly. :)
