The team examine whether a big old car is safer than a small new one, by crashing a 15-year-old Volvo 940 estate into a three-year-old Renault Modus. Jason Plato puts an Audi R8 through its paces when he races Tiff Needell in a Porsche 911, while Jonny Smith road tests the £330,000 Mercedes-Benz McLaren SLR Roadster. Plus, actor and comedian Patrick McGuinness takes his motorbike test and Vicki Butler-Hendrson tries out the Peugeot 207 GTi

On Channel 5 @ 8PM Tonight.

Hope the SLR review is good.

Should be good, especially the volvo vs. modus thing. I know which I'd rather crash in.

As an aside, I'd quite like to know your thoughts on cars being designed to pass NCAP tests rather than to protect occupants...

It's something a friend of mine brought up the other night. He's known for talking twaddle though...

I'll make sure I've got any channel but 5 on tonight then!
And what a glorious array of programs you could watch.. the intellectually challenging Eastenders.. the proactive studentathon University Challenge.. the aesthetic pleasure of "Too Fat for Treatment" or Dispatches.. :p:cool:

surely the tests test for the effects to the occupants though ? . or should

stick a g meter on the dummy or something ? dunno

think id rather be in the volvo . surely the weight of it is just going to knock the small car flying

NCAP is far less useful than people think becuase:

a) It tests the effects of the car hitting an offset concrete block the same sort of weight as the car in question. How often do we do that on the road? Hardly ever.

b) Results are class dependant and cannot be compared between classes, but most people dont realise this. There is every chance that, according to NCAP, a 5 star supermini is not as safe as a 4 star saloon.

Well yeah its all crap anyway. Stuff like getting an extra star for a seatbelt warning 'bong' just shows you that stars != ability to survive a collision. Plus they rate cars in about 8 different classes, as you'd think would make sense, but the way the manufacturers use it as a marketing tool this isn't made clear. Hence a 5 star rating for a Clio is not comparable for a 5 star rating in a S Class.

/edit: just notice fox made these valid points above, too slow as ever

Crackin tele series.

at a guess, volvo v modus, both drivers would be fubarred beyond belief. modus would prob retain its shape but occupants would be tossed about like you won't believe. the volvo would prob result in major chest compression forces and head bash on steering wheel (no bags presumably) which would be life threatening.

small new v big old = prob equal
small new v small old = new
big new v big old = new
small old v big new = new
small old v big old = old

Easy. Modus will win.

Why? Well, why would Renault allow them the use of a Modus if it was going to be anything other than positive advertising for them? This crash has the risk of undermining the whole NCAP system. As if Renault will allow THAT to happen.

It's always mixed feelings for me watching 5th Gear. I love the format of the show and the content EXCEPT...

I cannot stand 90% of the presenters.

That Plato geezer... I can't say what I think of this guy as I'd be banned for life :D

Tiff Needell (SP?) he annoys the heck out of me

There's only VBH and Quentin Wilson (is he still on it?) that I can stomach, the rest just wind me up. Maybe if I turn the sound off and put Subs on? And get someone to hold something in front of Needell's face throughout...

Also, with regards to the NCAP stuff above- I used to really put a lot of faith in those ratings, but having seen the criteria and, as was said, the fact they have different categories really put me off. I still would avoid a 1 or 2 star car, but wouldn't be bothered by their perceived differences between a 4 and 5 star rating.

Watching it a delayed start but some praise for the clio, yay :p

Think the SLR roadster is a stunning looking car *dribble*
