Doing proper bodybuilding and 2 martial arts will take up a lot of time if you want to do it all to a good standard.

I do not do "proper" bodybuilding by any means although I like to think that I work hard in the gym 3-4 times a week, but 2 jitsu session per week is as much as I can handle. I tried for 2 weeks to add another kickboxing session but found it too much, not because I couldn't handle it, but because I couldn't recover properly from the gym and was rather tired all the time with no rest day in the week.

For my money there's no such thing as the one best martial art - the ultimate is probably going to be a combination of all/most of them and the ability to do it without thinking. If you're just going to do one then think about your own personality, some martial arts tend to suit more aggressive personalities and some are better for more passive types. It's not an absolute by any means but it's certainly worth thinking about, I've tried several martial arts for various lengths of time and some I felt more naturally inclined towards so I would presume it's the same for most people.

If you are only going to do one then kickboxing might be a reasonable choice in that you'll learn about decent striking and improve your fitness if nothing else, it's not a huge amount of use if the fight goes to ground perhaps so you may need something else such as jujitsu to cover that. However as has been pointed out the best option is almost always to not be in that situation in the first place.

JuJitsu isnt just a grappling martial art, we also take on multiple attackers including broken bottle, glass bottle, chain, live blade knife and other attacks. multiple attackers defence is started at orange belt in our style. but i agree with most its not what martial art its your understanding of body mechanics, clarity of thought/presence of mind and ability to use your spacial awareness and flow with out thought, in jitsu we call that the art of Shin.

If that was in response to my comment, apologies as I probably didn't make it very clear. It wasn't meant to dismiss Jujitsu as just for grappling but more to say that it in combination with a more overtly striking based art would offer better coverage than either in isolation.

Your school/style certainly sounds good though practicing with a variety of different weapons.

I would say boxing, the fitness from it is great. There will be loads of opportunities to get a fight.

I would say join a club, I done so before I moved up here. It was bloody hard work, but I learnt so much just within 3-4 weeks of doing it. Good fun, but one of the hardest workouts I've ever been through. A lot of it is your movement and AB work.

May well start it back up here, seen as there is a club a throw stone away from my room!

Boxing..without a doubt. You need to put yourself in front of a real person who is going to hit you.Boxing does this.

Learning how to fight is as much about getting used to standing in front of someone trying to hurt you as it is about the training.

Agreed. That leaves you open to friends of the person you are controlling kicking your face in....
The last place you want to be is on the floor.

I agree with Morba here. Most of us will have to defend ourselves at one point or another, and rolling about on the floor is a vunerable place to be. I did Judo in school and it's good to get someone on the floor, the rest of it is ground work which isn't going to help if Drunk Bluds mates are there. Been taking some Thai Kickboxing classes at uni this year, I'd feel more confident striking someone and legging it than anything else.

When it comes to a street fight you need options, 1 of which must always be 'get running' :)

Judo is great, wish I had some time to start it again, my boy wants to do it also, but he will have to wait a few years yet :)

Fighting is all about attitude no matter what way you want to do it or what you call it. Some people enjoy hurting other people.
My only advice would be target the weak spots like the bridge of the nose making sure your thumb nail gouges an eye & if you get close enough bite a chunk out of there cheek.
If all else fails though then Windmill like a crazy man. :D

It really is, and definately something that i'm glad to have done even if not to a high level (green + two tabs), even learning basic outer/inner leg reaps and some throws will give a big advantage. How old is your lad?

Yeah, just knowing how to unbalance someone can be a huge advantage.

He's 5, so a touch young yet. I'm throwing him around a bit (WWE style) to get him used to being thrown hehe.
