Filled up with petrol.......now my dash needles don't move?

I'm a little bit concerned here. Stopped off for a normal fill up as I was around 40 miles left of petrol. I used the local BP at a rather nasty 106.9p/litre.

Now, when I turn on the engine and start to set off I see the needles on all the readouts are not moving at all (not even when I turned the key to start - normally they go to a certain default point). Tried turning it off and on again and still no response from it.

Everything else works fine...all the electrics and so forth. I definitely haven't filled up with diesel or anything (I'm sure it wouldn't work anyway) but I did notice a strong smell of petrol when I had finished. Also when I parked up tonight I heard the petrol in the tank sloshing about almost like there was some sort of petrol wave :)

I didn't really notice it but my girlfriend also pointed out the exhaust didn't sound quite right and it was blowing....

Any ideas?

206 GTI. Haven't checked them no, is it likely to be that? I suppose they can go at any time but why as soon as I've filled up hmm...

It's just your car protesting at fuel prices. Change the oil, give it a hoover and she'll be singing your tune again in no time.

Seriously though, it's a peugeot, if it has electrics, it WILL go wrong. You could check fuses etc, but it could potentially be looking for a needle in a haystack. Best take it in for a check.

OK cool I'll have to have a look at the fuses tomorrow evening (shame as I have to drive to work and back tomorrow and don't have time in the morning...). So there is a fuse for the needles?

I suppose it would make sense if everything else works the same.

I know this is going to sound really stupid (stay with me :p) but try checking out your expansion tank.

I had a friend who's dash packed in on his old 206. Dead nothing at all. Had the AA out, checked out all the fuses etc and they were all fine. They towed it to the local dealership and wanted us to stick the keys through the door but that wasn't going to work as he needed it to get home. We decided to have a look under the bonnet and see if we could see anything obvious, I noticed the expansion tank looked a touch empty to opened the top of the expansion tank, there was an almighty rush of air and then when we tried it again it worked fine. When he had it checked at the dealer there was no problems with it.

Might work, might not, was one of the weirdest things I've come across though so has stuck in my mind.
