Blender really has come on leaps and bounds. I remember trying to save up enough pocket money to buy it when it was being sold by NaN, but then they went bump.
I really should try to learn it.

At the dvd extras of Finding Nemo the Pixar team discusses (and shows) how their graphics were (at the time!) so advanced that they were essentially photorealistic. They go on about how they were forced to make them more cartoonish to not lose the 'animation' appeal. However, it was clear even back then that they could produce wonderfully realistic animations - it just didn't make business sense to do so.

Also, no need to go that far, just look at all the well made cgi. It looks realistic already.

They need to be pretty sturdy devices too, SSDs and consumer level drives won't like being written to 24/7. RAID 6 array might come in handy here as well.
