I can't help but feel a bit miffed at having not played through any of the FF games, and I was wondering if there are any I could get at the minute that might be worth playing, to lead up to the release of the new FF in march, which I will most certainly be getting on PS3! :D

Its just so I can get a feel of any storylines and so forth, not that its required but hey :p

Hardware at my disposal for the aformentioned games - Xbox360, PS3, PC, PS2/Xbox (DS aswell but I imagine its crap on that :p) Films any good also?

Any recommendations guys? Im not a graphics whore but I do like them looking nice so whatever it displays best on is ideal, but as I said, the game itself should outweigh any ageing issues! :p

Currently about to steamroll through the God of War Collection on PS3, oh how I wish all the FF games got the same treatment :(

I'd say get 7,8 and 9(not a lot liked 9 but i thought it was good). 6 is also worth a look. Assuming you have a PSone.

x and 12 on the PS2 were also good.

you must play 7 its the best IMO, 8 is not too bad, 9 kinda easy, 10 i found not too bad and i think there final fantasy 4 on the ds which i was told was good

Still worth playing through 7-9 and if you can handle NES/SNES style 1-6 is worth
taking a look into as well.

Final Fantasy III and IV DS remakes are actually really good and far from "crap". :p

You can easily get I-VI on the GBA and play those on your DS.

Final Fantasy IV onwards is where the stories are more intricate with character-driven plots in each game as the first 3 aren't anything too special.

As mentioned above, VII, VIII and IX are great for the PS1 classics. And then theres X, X-2 and XII for the PS2.

As for films, Final Fantasy: Spirits Within is okay enough as a Sci-Fi flick. Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children is an over-the-top action fan service piece and pretty good, but will be confusing if you have not played VII.

FF7 is the grand daddy of all FF games IMO... please play this first, but remember this is no current gen graphics... but it don't matter because it awesome anyway! in fact its the best game ever in my catalogue of games!

6 - 10 are all worth playing. I personally don't like 8 but lots do, much like I love 9 but lots don't. Stay clear of X-2 unless you have a vagina. The films are good, although I personally prefered Spirits Within to Advent Children.

3 & 4 on the DS are very good (4 is especially difficult)
7 is still legendary to this day
8,9 on PSone are also good
10 on PS2 is ok
10-2 is something a little different but still decent.
12 is much more similar to 11 the online game. A lot of people disliked it but i found it one of the best to date.

I've not played 1,2,5 and 6 so i can't comment on those but i belive you can get 5/6 on the PSone. Not sure about 1 & 2 i think thats PSP or GBA only.

They are all different enough for you to appreciate them individually too. Which is something i find quite rare these days.

6 - Couldn't see past the crappy graphics (on an hdtv its very bad)
7 - Oblivion is the only game imo that beats this. Considering it came out in 1997 its a brilliant timeless classic.
8 - Very good, bigger than 7 but 7 will always be my fave
9 - Like 8 but not quite as good
10 - No world map to run around but still very good (1st ps2 FF)
10-2 -Good, but I still need to play more than 5 hours into it.
11 - Like WoW but not as good. Avoid tbh
12 - Good, but I still need to play more than .5 hours into it.

Every few years I will play through FF7 again. I recently started playing FF10 again as when I originally played it I got near the end and came back to it 18 months later and i did not know where I was, where to go etc etc. Just finishing FF10 now.
FF8 is fantastic and the card game is something to get into (FF9 card game was crap).

Is 6 worth a look?? I bought it new in 2002 and have barely touched it!

I - Still good after 22 years. It's very simple and certainly not as deep as later titles. The best version is the PSP version, closely followed by the Wonderswan Colour...

II - Also very good, this is without doubt the hardest in the series. Adds a little more complexity to the story (not much) but is marred by the ridiculous levelling system and difficulty. Again, look for the PSP version.

III - Personally, I was never impressed with FFIII. The only official English verion (for the DS), whilst highly polished really spoiled the charm of the fan translated version that I had been played in the past.

IV - The first of the 'modern' Final Fantasys (IMO), IV gives an excellent story, a vast world memorable characters and much enjoyment :p For me, again the DS version kind of spoils the charm a bit, but it's certainly well worth looking at. DS version has the best translation and is very shiny, but the GBA version is still well worth picking up. Avoid the PS1 version - poor translation and terrible, terrible loading times. Worth it for 'You Spoony Bard!' alone :p

V - Probably my favourite of the 'Nintendo' FFs. Again, a compelling story with fun memorable charaters (Gilgamesh anyone? :-D). A real rollercoaster tale of loss and sadness (mostly). Widely regarded to have the best music of the lot. Look for the GBA version, avoid the PS1 version for the same reasons as above (though slightly better translation in the PS1 version).

VI - Still regarded by many to be the best in the series (though this is contested with FFVII). My plus points are going to be very similar to IV & V here. A *huge* array of playable characters, with a decent range of Espers too. Contains probably my favourite Final Fantasy 'moment (**** di Mezzo Carattere). Sounding like a broken record here, but avoid the PS1 version, it's gash. Look for the GBA version, or import FFIII from the States with an import SNES.

VII - Needs no talking about. Play it, simples :p

VIII - Underated in most people's opinion. Most were a bit disappointed at the big change in style and presentation from FFVII, but most had never played an FF before VII. Big departure from previous titles anime styles, VIII has more realistically proportioned characters in a believable world. The draw magic system has many fans and many haters, IMO it's a good system, but a little easy to overpower your characters. Personally, I love this title. Yes, the characters are pretty weak for the most part, but the story moves along at a fair pace after a slow start, and for me is generally quite exciting :) Massive world with plenty of secrets too (which IMO is better than VII's world).

IX - Again, highly underated. Certainly seems to be easier (and shorter) than VII & VIII. Again, a highly enjoyable title with a welcome return to 4 character parties. Not as many side quests as the last few titles.

X - It took me a couple of attempts to play through X (mainly due to house moves). Overall I was very impressed in the end. Sadly, doesn't contain an overworld like all previous titles, which may disappoint. A decent story, levelling and combat system, marred by poor English voice acting. The Blitzball minigame (which is compulsory at points) won't be to everyone's taste. Some truly astonishing side bosses wait for you after finishing the story ;)

X-2 - Dear gods, avoid like the plague.

XII - Personally, I really didn't enjoy XII. Overall it feels like a real departure from the spirit of the previous games. Plays like a single player MMORPG. Many rate the game highly, but it's not for me. Also again has very poor voice acting.

*whew*

Apop sums it up better than i could, right on the money on all counts other than saying IX was easier than VII and VIII, VII was much easier than IX.

Maybe it's a matter of perception : IX's theme overall is far less 'mature' than VII and VIII, which may have given me the perception of ease. I had no problems at any point in IX, whereas there were at least one or two bosses I struggled with on my first couple of runs through VII & VIII. That could also come down to experience these days too though tbh with the many thousands of hours I've put into this series, I don't expect any surprises :p

Honestly ask yourself how much do graphics affect my enjoyment?

Final fantasy 7 is most people's favourate and can be bought off the ps3 store. So I'd recommend that, then if you want some (much) improved graphics, and still one of the best final fantasy's try 10.

The guys above have mentioned all the games in detail, which is great. But in truth that's thousands of hours of game play, and playing them constantly you'd get bored. So just cherry pick the best ones, which are 7 or 10.

Also bear in mind final fantasy games are special, but there are not always innovative. So playing through something like valkery chronicles will give you a good idea of what a jrpg is like, and be pretty similar to final fantasy in a lot of ways. Without giving you the "my eye's they BURN" feeling of playing a ps1/ps2 game.

Get FFVII and FFX, those were the heavy hitters for me...rest were a bit meh :o

VIII is supposed to be great but I never got into it.

Only ever played FFX, used to think it was the nerdiest game series in the world until my mate got sick of me taking the wee wee so lent me his copy. Held onto that for a good few months, epic game. I apologised to all the "nerds" then they let me in their club :D
