Final Fantasy X is better than VII

Honestly as it is your first time playing this game Chris, I wouldn't even have to worry too much about it. Just play normally and should the time ever arise again, then you can do another better play through.

As long as Yuna is fine then it is no problem. She is pretty much the most important character and since the Aeons are quite essential in a way.

And for the typical which Final Fantasy is better crap, I'm at the point where I could care less. Each game is their own unique thing and I still enjoy them regardless.

You know what "I could care less" really means, right?

The difference is I actually talk and discuss about the specified title that is on topic instead of just spamming *Insert Roman numeral here* >> *Insert Roman numeral here* >>>>>> *And so forth* for the hell of it and which doesn't add anything at all. You can take those arguments to a dedicated "Which Final Fantasy is best thread" and there's plenty of those all around.

I feel the storyline to FFX is indeed better, the climax kinda comes out of nowhere but the character development for me was way superior. With FFVII only one or two of the characters grow in any real way, in FFX they are all part of the story in a big way and grow and develop along with it.

The issue with FFX is that you are always pretty much penned in, the Calm Lands is the closest you're going to get to a world map. There are barely any real side quests other than collecting optional aeons and some extra bosses in the 'endgame'. As a result it feels like less of a living breathing world in comparison to FFVII.

And Chris, on the sphere grid front, don't worry about it. Basically you can 'demolish' the existing sphere grid using destruction spheres that you can win in the arena. You can then win stronger stat spheres and replace the old ones so for example you could demolish a +1 strength sphere and replace it with a +4. This is stupidly time consuming though and is only something you need to do to defeat some of the optional end game bosses. The beginner sphere grid has more spheres in total compared to the standard one, however more of them are empty so this doesn't affect you until you start 'rebuilding' the tree, as a result you can get slightly higher stats with the beginner tree. The difference is minimal however, and by no means makes it harder to complete the actual storyline.

[EDIT] A tip - there is a tough boss at the end of the calm lands who only lets you use aeons for one turn each, however there is an easy way to beat him. If you go into a normal fight and summon an aeon, focus it and get it into limit break, then dismiss it and summon the next aeon. This will give you a whole roster of aeons all at limit break mode, ready to do their ultimate attack in their only move of the fight. Really makes a huge difference in some of the tougher fights you're about to encounter.

No walking around world map
Worst voice actors ever
Worst ending ever
Introduction of the "Celstial Weapons" in European/International version broke the game

I still really like it though. Can't wait to play the "HD" version on the PS3 when it's released, apparently has different voice actors!!

I agree with all of those Rossi apart from the ending, I felt the ending was utterly sublime.

Also, it was possible to build weapons with the same stats as the celestial weapons in the japanese release, afaik they were just put in to save all the grinding required. They are also pretty much a necessity in order to fight the optional bosses not present in the original release.

I liked 10, But it wasnt my favourite. 7 and 8 were.

The only final fantasy game I never rated very highly was 9. All the others are considered classics to me.

Now I'm thinking about it, I think I can say I like them all pretty much equally, I say 7 and 8 were my favourites, but I know from memory I got equally excited about playing all of them :D I dont remember much disappointment.

I didn't rate X as it was too linear and the story from what I remember didn't twist and turn no where near as much as 7 and 8. It's a bit unfair to judge now based
on half a play through compared to 7 which you've played and I presumed enjoyed enough to play three times! :).

edit: Though I will add in hindsight X is a good game compared to what they put out now. Lost Odyssey is the spiritual sequel to 7 and 8 in my opinion.

I have played FF6 (halfway through it), FF7 -> 12 and have the PS3 ones yet to play.

I feel FF10 and FF7 are both outstanding. FF10 has graphics that have aged well and voice acting, but then that cannot be held against FF7 as that was on the PS1. FF10 has a brilliant story and musical score. I do not like the sphere grid and the lack of the world map is a let down. I feel Blitzball is crap.
I am not sure which is better out of FF7 and FF10 because they are from different eras. It is easy to compare FF7 FF8 and FF9 as they are all extremely similar games.
Which is better out of FF7 and F10 is not a question that bothers me, as they are both fantastic for different reasons.

OP: Promise me that you will not play FF10-2. It is not a continuation of FF10 and half the characters are gone, with a completely different, yet shallow and rubbish storyline.

I recently purchased a brand new sealed non-platinum FF10 off ebay. I am going to keep it and hope one day it is a collectors item :).

I would also like to add some good points:
Sphere grid = Awesome
Turn view/stacker and wait = Awesome
Aeons = Awesome
Dark Aeons = Awesome (But DAMN HARD lol)
Musical score = Awesome

Loved X, except Blitzball, and VII too.....if really pushed, I think I would go with X, but VII really was astonishing at the time.....oh, and the card game from VIII (I think it ws VIII, not IX ?) was the best in-game mini-game !

Triple Triad? Fantastic game, FFVIII being in my top 5 games of all time and all (even though it's one of the easiest games ever created). Can easily play this minigame for hours and hours on end.

FF8 > FF7 > FF10 > A lot of things > FF9.

I hate 9.

You know what that means right? You're going to hell !!11!!!

Triple Triad is like Meth. I literally spent the best part of 10 hours playing that game after the Dolet mission so I could get my hands on 100 of the -aga spells, Tornado, Meltdown and various other mid-high level spells early in the game for 3 of my characters. It also helped me get the Lionheart on the first disc :p. The best part is, it never got boring.

FFX was great and a game I thoroughly enjoyed, but FF7 is in another league - the story, the visuals, the music, the atmosphere, all worked so well that it's not hard to see why so many feel it is a masterpiece.

Really wish I'd used that to be honest. Stupidly assumed that as I'm very familiar with the FF franchise that I'd be alright to use the advanced one.
To be fair, if I started from scratch now I'd probably be alright to use it and I'd certainly make better choices. The problem was that at the start I had no idea what it was all about and that there should be some planning so I just started arbitrarily getting upgrades. Eventually you're committed to certain path :(

Doing my best to rectify things now :)

The beginners sphere grid is stricter at the beginning of the game and limits freedom of the grid, ensuring your characters gain the experience that will make the game easier at the start. It does eventually let you loose with the reigns.

The expert sphere grid gives you complete freedom from the get go. Although, it has 60 sphere grid nodes less than the beginner grid.

Still, neither will hinder your enjoyment of the game, of course. Let us know when you've completed it.
