Final Fantasy X is better than VII

Nah,

FFVII > FFVIII > FFX > FFIX

for me. Yet to actually really play FFVI so can't comment on that but hear it is great.

All FF after X went rapidly downhill. This seemed to happen when Squaresoft became Square enix for what ever reason, Never been the same since.

Love the main theme from this FF, I liked the turn based system as well since it was very chess-like in terms of how you approached the bosses.

I didn't rate X as it was too linear and the story from what I remember didn't twist and turn no where near as much as 7 and 8. It's a bit unfair to judge now based
on half a play through compared to 7 which you've played and I presumed enjoyed enough to play three times! :).

edit: Though I will add in hindsight X is a good game compared to what they put out now. Lost Odyssey is the spiritual sequel to 7 and 8 in my opinion.

I agree about FFX being linear, it was a very corridor driven game. if it had been released today instead of over a decade ago I'd say it's entirely possibility it would have been as poorly received as FFXIII. Not to say it's a bad game but it does have some frustrating flaws which people turn a blind eye to with the rose tinted glasses of nostalgia, which is understandable.

The combination of great visuals for that era in gaming and the use of voice acting were a huge benefit towards making FFX popular.

I've had Lost Odyssey on my shelf for over a year and I've never touched it until a few days ago. I'm really enjoying it so far and it's definitely one of the better JRPG's this generation. It has some difficulty hurdles on the first disc but it starts to smooth out afterwards. The short stories/1000 year memories are a nice touch and one of the best parts of the game imo.

I often find it frustrating how people declare FFVII, VIII & IX as their favorite FF games. I think many started with VII from PS1 generation and despite their positive experiences its rather odd that they never considered dipping into previous iterations.
As someone whose been playing FF games since Mystic Quest all the way through to FFX, Id say the greatest FF is a toss up between FFIV & VI.
I deeply enjoyed VII in places but like someone else said, the game is grossly overrated. VIII & IX were interesting for different reasons (Future and Old school settings) but mostly forgettable and not something i feel motivated to revisit.
FFX was a fantastic game but deeply flawed. Yes it had interesting characters, settings, music and decent battle system but much of that was tainted by a lack of a world map. Huge part of FF universe is that sense of wonder you get from discovery. Never really played another FF after that. I may jump on FF12 if they make a HD remaster but until Square enix get back on track, i dont think FF will ever be the same again.

Honorable mention to FF Tactics PS1 :)

Think I also agree with the OP's statement.

I was 14 when FFVII came out and there is no doubt that it was an incredible experience. It was the first RPG I'd played of that scale, the cinematics, the story and the music were fantastic. The two lasting memories are Sephiroth's theme and the Aerith death cinematic.

FFX was released nearly five years later and I feel that when you actually put the nostalgia to one side, it was the better game. It had a brilliant story which became that much more real through the voice acting along with lots of cinematics and of course the better graphics and technology. I also liked the overall setting for the game in a world that resembled for the most part something between Asia and Polynesia. If you look past FFVII's catchy tunes, the music in this game was also better and they even had an orchestra at their disposal for the big numbers.

Both games have a massive character plot twist, which I won't say anymore on due to the OP not finishing. However I think FFX's works better and is more touching, I didn't see the way it ended coming.

Not so much today, but this cinematic was incredible at the time:

I am getting SMASHED by Seymour Flux!! Absolutely dominated!! :(

May have to go level up a touch!! :(

Told you he was a tough boss :p

Did you heed my advice about getting all of your Aeons into limit break before you enter the fight? Makes it SO much easier as you can summon an aeon to absorb a powerful attack and then use its limit break before Seymore dismisses it.

The reason for me 7 > all (and chuck 8 in there too) is the modern FF's just feel a bit too 'closed' for my liking .. on the rails .. like an RPG version of CoD.

Well FPS games were actually an influence for the way Final Fantasy XIII was structured.

Too many pretty looking corridors, not enough space to move about.

xiii is the most linear game i have ever played. you can just walk in a straight line towards the end of map and complete the level. there is more cut scene than actually playing and there is nothing to explore or side story. half the game is just a tutorial of how to play this game anyway.

Ha, why are people so extreme in their criticism of games.

It may well be that FF XIII is very linear in comparison to other FF's or even most RPG's, but it simply isn't 'the most' linear game you've ever played..... :p

Lighting Returns: Final Fantasy XIII was recently announced too.

Apparently this game will have some open world elements to it, and it seems to be more of an action game.

Oh, where in the **** is Versus XIII. It's been too long!

too bad it is. games from some genre have a single aim for example, in fighting games, you can only win by ko or time out, or in racing games and shooting games, you just have to be faster and quicker than anyone else. but there isnt a single way to do this nor does the game force you into a certain action to win, unfortunately for xiii, it is does because there is nothing else to do or go.

Old school side scrolling 2D games are pretty much the most linear games could be.

Just go from left to right, done!

So yeah, XIII isn't the most linear EVAH!
