so after weeks of waiting for the phone to become available on vodafone, and over a week waiting for it to be delivered to the shop, i have finally got my hands on it.

i picked it up about 1pm, and was working from 2:30, so i havent really had too much time to have a look at it in too much detail. so i will just put on some pics and basic info i have so far (i will add to this later).

i will start with the pics, so heree is a pic of the phone

phone with stylus (this slides in from the top left back corner of the phone)

in the box of treats there was also this neoprene wallet for it. currently i am using it, but im sure the novelty will wear off.

there is also the charger, usb computer link cable and the headphones. being a walkman phone, they have the in-line walkman controls (play, next etc...)

first think that i noticed (as i hadnt actually seen the phone for myself only online and in magazines) it isnt actually balck, its a kind of aubergine colour (depending on how the light hits is). i like it theough, and it conrsasts well with the orange buttons. also, as i said this came from the vodafone shop so i was expecting vodafone and logo's all over the phone, not one. joy, the only vodafone branding i have found is the start-up and shut down screen. obviously completely flat keypad (not buttons to get dust and crud in between) and no joystick. i am still a bit sceptical about the scroll wheel, but on my previous SE phones the joystick has ALWAYS got jammed up after about 4 months and never works fully.

main screen has a 'today' menu, you can expand this to get a list of how many texts, e-mails, missed calls and appointments you have. also a sortcut button in the top left corner, press this for a quick menu of new message, connection, and other stuff.

i was given a quick rundown of the stuff from the guy that did my upgrade, and i didnt really know too much about the phone. capable of broadband speed internet, accepts the tv feature (i guess this is live tv, but i dont really know).

that is about it for now.

No offence but thats definatly an ugly phone. Whats functionality like?

so far i have been impressed by certain 'little' things with it.

when i got the phone it had about 65% battery, so didnt wack it onto charge as soon as i got home, just started using it. only just taken the charger out of the box and the plug that goes into your phone has the pins on one side (to go into your phone and charge) but also has the female connection so that you can still plug in your headphones!

sony appear to of changed the way that files are recieved by bluetooth now. my bro has got a k800i last week and his does the same. when you recieve the file it is saved as a new message, you then have to open the message and save the item (to whichever folder you want) from the message. it does add a few seconds onto recieving the file, but it is saved where you want it in a proper folder architecture.

touchscreen on this is pretty good (it has handwriting recognition, but i havent used that yet). but almost every icon on the screen will do something. eg, just had a missed call, don bother checking the calls list, touch the icon and it lists your missed calls.

BUT, there are things that im not liking so much. now, this could well be because i have, so far, been too stubborn to look at the instructions but i cant seem to find my sent messages, and i cant work out how to turn on delivery reports. i think i will have to give in tomorrow and look, but this is the first phone since about 1998 that i will of actually looked at the instructions for!!!

oh, and it has the built in 4GB memory.

Didn't feel that comfortable to hold next to the ear for any duration of time. And it didn't seem to possess any keys to accept and end a call?

It comes up on the touchscreen :)

As for finding sent messages if you go to messaging there will be a little arrow pointing to the right after the "x Unread" bit press that and it scrolls through sent/drafts etc.
Delivery reports can be found in the SMS account section.
Well thats how it is on the M600i but as there pretty much identical phones i cant see it being any different

It's got handwriting recognition software so you can scribble away on the touchscreen :D

Dangerousmouse: The bluetooth sending feature you mentioned worked like that on my P900, and it's Mystic Purple I'll have you know :p

ok, texting is pretty good. initially i thought it may cause problems with the flat front panel. eg, attempt to touch abc, but easily hit it in the wrong place and get jkl. but its pretty good. as mentioned it has handwriting recognition, i tried this once but didnt have the patience for it (probably have a little play tonight though), there is also an on-screen keyboard. this is currently my preferred method.

in addition to the now standard T9 predictive text, it also had something along the lines of predictive words. if you want to type "now going into town" you get as far as 'no' and you can use the scroll wheel to select the current, and following word(s).

i got if through the high street vodafone shop, but it is also available from there telephone based store (191 from your vodafone mobile).

so far i am quite impressed with the walkman feature. imported a few albums using the SE disc2phone software. its a bit like itunes, and you have to update your music library every time you add/remove/change songs, but it only takes a few seconds. standard sort of options for mp3 players (artist, album, genre etc...). it also connects to gracenote to get the album info and atrwork (if you dont import it). you can then change the view around and just have the album art, listed format with artwork with album and artist, or just a list of album and artist.

sound quality through the built in speaker is mediocre, doesnt go overly loud though. the sound through the headphones is a lot better. i might see if i can blag a free set of the SE portable speakers and see how they perform.

What annoys me in those phones is that they are impossible to operate with one hand and they are made for just about anything but being everyday phone. Calls require stick, sms' require stick, JogDial is useless because of the size of the device. Buttons are flush with the body and thus give you kind of unsure feeling. Just few normal buttons more would make it much better. It's not like there is no space to put them. Touchpad should be additional feature, not replacement. And then there is messy and completely inconsistent menu structure and movement. And outrageously short battery life for a business phone. And lack of camera.

you dont have to use the stick for all these things. the accept/reject buttons on the touchscreen are plenty large enough to touch with your finger.

although i think that they have gone overboard with buttons for the walkman. there is a dedicated walkman button on the left of the keypad, a play/stop button on the RHS of the phone, and 2 walkman buttons on the touchscreen!!
