This was my first introduction to anything to come out of Japan, and I really enjoyed it. Can anyone suggest any other films drawn and animated so beautifully with such a good story line? I don't want anything too wierd or 'off the wall' either ;)

Howls Moving Castle and Princess Mononoke are the obvious ones, by the same studio and pretty much the same level of animation.

If you don't mind "lower" quality (although damn good for it's time), then The Cat Returns, Whisper of the Jeart and Porco Rosso also by the same studio are also extremely good (pretty much anything Ghibli is worth watching).

If you don't mind subtitle only releases there are loads more.

Laputa Castle in the Sky.

Much better in my opinion.

I thought of that, but given the age of the animation thought it might not fit his criteria (although really given that I mentioned Porco I shouldn't have missed it out).

Steamboy (Not seen it but got pretty detailed animation)

My Neighbour Totoro (Good film, very cute, same studio)

Agreed. You won't go wrong with this one. :)

If you don't mind a bit of sci-fi try Ghost in The Shell, Patlabor or Spriggan.

If you're looking for great animation I watched the first Last Exile Disc the other day and it was jaw dropping.

i'm not sure why, I like Totoro but the film totally weirds me out.

Nobody's mentioned Akira yet.. i wouldn't call the animation beuatiful, but it was well done.

Kai Doh Maru is quite pretty

Wings of Honneamise (good luck finding it but the better version is the old on with english subtitles)

I'd also put a vote in for Laputa, Howl's moving castle or pretty much anything from Studio Ghibli

oh, and Cowboy Bebop.. there's a single dvd film that's quite cheap to buy to see if you like it, the box sets of the series will set you back about £60 though :)

Can't go wrong with anything by Studio Ghibli. They always come out with consistently good stuff. Even their oldies hold up well today.

It's very high tech sci-fi anime, practically the opposite of any Studio Ghibli films.
