Hello people.

As some of you may be aware, my current alloys are rotten. They are some BBS split rim things that are apparently notorious for corrosion. As soon as companies find out that they are two piece, the price for refurbishing gets stupid... Lepsons quoted me £850 without looking at them.

I need to get new alloys because air is leaking from one of them. I'm sure eventually they will all go flat. I didn't really care about the aesthetics but I might as well get wheels that suit.

The only problem is, I don't really know what looks good on my car! Apparently I'm looking for 16" rims and a place to buy them.

Help me please, because I'm sure I would just end up at Halfords and regret it.

Get yourself on the Edition38 classifieds (You need one post to access it) and have a look around what's on offer there, though be careful about fitments, a lot of the wheels on there will require adaptors and spacers. You may find a few things that tickle your fancy.

Rimstyle is a good site if you want brand new wheels, I've always thought the Cades Bern wheels look fairly nice on the Mk4 and they're not hugely expensive. My neighbour has a black set on his Octavia and they're decent wheels.

Or you could just try and hunt down a set of Montreal's that were fitted to the GTIs, nice simple style that looks perfectly at home on the Mk4.

You're not limited to 16s though, you can happily fit 17s or 18s if you wanted without needing modification, though obviously tyre prices will increase for larger wheels.

real splittys? if so there a bunch of people who will have them off you, you can split them and get them powder coated

dont go halfords they sell cheap quality wheels
schmidt theres a fe vids floating around somwere about the redinox rims which involved driving with no tyre and chucking it off the shop roof with no damage. looking vw mags you'll find some decent places to shop for all things vw depenging on budget you can also get some genuine porsche rims

I think they are real but I don't know how I would tell. I can take a picture on the weekend as by the time I get home these days, it's too dark! Another reason I didn't want to go down the refurbish route is because I heard they will be liable to corrode again in the future. I don't want to have to keep getting them fixed.

I have a Golf GTI and the wheels that are currently on there are these - http://www.dubberssportsvws.co.uk/parts/391/bbs-16inch-split-rim-alloy-wheels-5-stud-very-rare

The middle grey bit is mostly okay. It's the rim part that is proper rotten and air is leaking from there.

they might be 2 piece, way to find out is to look at the back of the wheel if there is a parting line.

best thing to do with them wheels is shot blast and powder coat and for the finish ad durability way cheaper. what do you mean by rotten? is the paint flaking off? leaking air is usually distorted wheel or a kiwk **** ******* scraping the paint off and leaving the debris where the bead seats on the rim

At first it looked like there was mould growing under the lacquer. If you touched it, it still felt smooth. Now everything around the edge is flaking and corroding.
Holy crap at those Schmidt wheels :o I can buy two of my car for the price of the carbon fibre ones!

thats the paint flaking alloy is not as bad as steel when it comes corrosion, the surface corrosion forms a barrier between fresh alloy and the air so you can strip the wheel and let it corrode only thing is the wheel will weld itself to your hub
