I currently have mc afee, I don't like it. If I buy norton retail can I install in both the PC and laptop or can you suggest something else?

The new MS firewall/virus thingey is for US only I understand but I think you can use it on two machines.

Any suggestions?

I used to use NOD32 on all my machines but Im now using Avast since for some reason NOD32 didnt work well with ATI Catalyst Control Centre.

I can highly reccomend Avast, its light on resources and better still its free!

I have Zone Alarm AV and firewall and I've been very happy with it :-) I might switch to Kaspersky next year though as that's received great reviews :)

Ive always used the free version of zonealarm and the free copy of AVG Antivirus, never once had a problem and since AVG updates very regularly you always with great protection :)

Avast + SP2 Firewall + Windows Defender = Secure system

Job done.

antivirus + windows defender = slow system

having two things scan each file as they're used is not a good thing to do

Not in my experience, and I've been using similar configurations for years.

It's just bog standard internet security. You shouldn't be without it.

sure it does

do a simple test like open photoshop or copy 300 files from drive x: to drive y:; the more file scanners you have installed, the slower the files will copy, use a copying program to see the transfer rates.. -maybe you should evaluate your setup..

on my main machine, i use xp sp2 firewall, spywareblaster and thats it
the rest of my security is just be not doing anything silly :p

used my pc like this for a few years with no problems, since i've spent so much on my hardware, it'd be silly to slow it all down with unrequired software

on my mum and brothers machines, i've put nod32 on along with spyware blaster, adaware and spybot, so they've both got nod32 scanning (and therefore slowing down) their pc's

if you use your pc for porn/visiting pirate software sites/dodgy sites, then yes you def need av and spyware protection

Can't agree with you. I don't notice any slow downs. Not to say their not there, but I don't notice them.

I do everything on my pc with windows defender and avast running in the tray.

It's just standard internet security. OK so you argue that being careful can do an equally good job, but sooner or later you'll slip, or someone else will for you.

fair enough

besides me, the only person that uses my pc is my mrs, and she only uses it for music / films, and they're all readonly access :)
