Fireworks CS3 or Photoshop CS3 for web design

I would say Fireworks is more than good enough for webdesign, It has some nice features for integrating with html, like chopping and image mapping and such.

Photoshop would probably be overkill if that is all it is going to be used for...

but definately use the trials to see which you prefer! :)

If your not too keen on using Photoshop there is a wide range of tutorials out there to help. But with fireworks there is normally less.

I'd say that the majority of designers would use Photoshop, and it is widely regarded as a great tool, Fireworks you may find yourself lagging behind ability wise, maybe not though.

But you don't use Photoshop to design websites, only part of the graphics which you then implement in your CSS, so all you need to be able to do is become familiar and able to create images and you're sorted.

I tend to use both FW and PS, I find some things easier to do with one over the other and vice versa.

Just curious, why do you need to make the decision over whether to use one or the other ( assuming its a "cost" thing? ).

You could download the trials and try both from Adobe. See what suits you best.

Fireworks, unless you need to do some tricky bitmap handling or pull off some difficult effects - then go to Photoshop. It's so much easier to make small adjustments to things in Fireworks - there really isn't a lot to learn in the program and it being vector-based makes it nicer too.

Photoshop is more 'powerful' but I only ever use it if I need that - otherwise I find it too overcomplicated to do simple things!

Thanks for your opinions. To satisfy curiosity - yep it was a cost thing. We had a license for each and I got first pick. Still undecided so reading reviews online - I don't have the time to test the apps. I've always been a Fireworks user but feel like I've missed out on lots of things PS.

FW seems pretty good for creating nice menus + web gfx generally so its more likely I will go for that. PS looks incredible but probably far exceeds my requirements!

just to add a question to this thread (not meaning to take over - but maybe of some use to the OP)

When I use photoshop to design a whole site, I have a lot of trouble when transferring it to HTML or CSS because I find you have to cut the stylish header, nav bar and any thing done to the columns out and then use them as gifs or whatever and then write HTML or CSS around it...

You cannot simply slice the header, nav bar and main content columns from PS and transfer them to HTML and CSS without having to write the code can you? even if you do use Dreamweaver...

please clarify

cheers

Even if you could, you shouldn't ;) Code it up yourself!
