(almost:p)

Today I ran my first 5KM, which for me is an achievement as I've never ran that far before.

I'm into running now, though need to get some proper running shoes. It's such a good feeling beating your time and going further distances, hopefully I can try 10K sometime in a few months.

I know the time isn't very good for 5KM, it was 33mins 10 secs, but I have set a benchmark for myself and I will try and improve it each time I go. Having not exersised one bit for the past three years, I really needed to do something for the job I've started is quite physical, running is a great thing to do to increase my stamina and overall fitness.:)

Well done bud:) Runnings a bit addictive, I did have a target of a 1/2 marathon at one point, but my shins put paid to that.

I'd incorporate some interval training and some slow long un's to get you speed up and stamina up aswell.

I must admit I do enjoy running, more so when you have an app to track ya route/distance/time etc..

I've done some reading today about POSE running technique its quite interesting and definately worth a look.

Seems to lower the amount of energy expelled and be better for your body overall.

Also regarding running shoes in Swindon we have a place that puts you on a treadmill and watch you run for a bit using video's and so on. They help pick the right shoes for your style of running most definately worth a look, although I am yet to try this I have heard good things from people I know who have.

That's an ok time for your first 5k, no need to do your self down.

If you want to improve then concentrate on distance for the moment and ignore time. If you build up your fitness then you times will come down naturally.

You need to get some proper running trainers asap if your running without them.

Running is addictive.

I've started many times but since september I've started a proper regular running week to week.

I can run over 10mile now.

Next step is an 18miler to the coast and back, another few weeks before I'll give it a shot

Would these Asics running shoes be good to buy? Cost £30.

Depends on what your feet are like.

I'm sure 90% of people here will agree when I say goto your nearest running shop to get them test out how your run....

I don't know the science behind it all :) but I do know that getting the wrong type of running shoe will do more harm than good

What LK says; get to a proper running shopand get then to fit you some proper shoes by watching you run. It will make a world of difference and will save your knees.

If you can't get to a shop do the 'wet test' and see what that suggests. It'll be a guide, but not as good as a video of your gait whilst running. The shoe you link to is a cushioning shoe, so suitable for a neutral gait.

If the wet test suggests neutral then you could try that shoe, and just stay alert for any new aches and pains.

I use a mix of neutral, supportive and stripped down race shoes so it's not as simple as saying 'you overpronate' so shoe X is what you need. When I'm racing all the support in the world wouldn't make a difference as my heels hardly touch the ground, which is when the supportive mechanisms in the shoe would come into play.

This isn't a dig at Rich's post but as you're just starting out ignore anything gimmicky like pose, just run and enjoy it without worrying too much about bells, whistles and hocus pocus. My take on pose is that it's the same as a fad diet, give something a name and everyone goes woooooo!

I've decided to get the Gel Nimbus 11 shoes, I tried them in the shop and feel fine. I really like them and will run in them tommorow hopefully if the the weather picks up.
