First Car Search! Must Be Diesel

I think you're all being very mean. Perhaps the mandated requirement for diesel that cannot be challenged is that he has a plentiful cheap and illegal red diesel supply?!

This, or perhaps there is a gun to his head stating that he must only buy a diesel?

I came hoping cars would be suggested, not to be questioned on things that are beyond my control.

You should have known that was probably wishful thinking for this place :p As soon as someone comments they absolutely must have something but cannot possibly explain why, it immediately piques everyones interest as the reason are almost always highly amusing.

If you're looking at small cars like Fiestas and Clios, you may as well just go out and try and test drive some and see what takes your fancy. Everyone on here might tell you X is the best to get but if you don't like it, that's not really much use to you still.

My only suggestion would be to look at something bigger like maybe an older Focus.

whats red diesel?

ill be doing mixture really, motorway driving and city driving, also my mother will use the car occasionally.

i really like the new fiestas but they are a bit too much atm

a diesel will be fine for your driving style

I bought a Ford focus 1.6tdci last year which has DPF from Fords which was owned from new from them which they used as a business car.

I travel shortish journeys (minor roads and the odd bit on motorways) every now and again and have yet to encounter a problem with my DPF.

oh and you may be able to get a mk7 fiesta 1.4tdci for around 5k if you look around , especially if you look at a 58/08 reg plate and the lower spec trim

The new fiesta is a decent enough little car - slow as a week in jail but that's not of any concern when you're a new driver - a 1.4 tdci would fit the bill nicely imo. Any car with a dpf has the potential to chuck up issues - be sure to make it regenerate fairly regularly and you'll at least minimize those issues.

I didn't think the 1.4/1.6TDCi had a DPF unless it was in the Econetic form? From what I remember, the Econetic was always marketed as the 1.6TDCi+DPF?

Edit: I think I'm wrong, at least for the Mk.7 they all do.

I vote for the polo. I have and 1.9tdi pd100 and ive had it since I was 19 and the insurance isn't too bad and the 1.4tdi is another group below in insurance and does even more mpgz. I've had 71mpg out of my 1.9 on a long trip so a 1.4 should be capable of more. The only thing to look out for is wishbone bushes and the clutch went on my one at 72k which was fairly expensive to fix but my one is 10 years old(02 plate but same car as one up to 2009)

out of interest OP just how must you have a oil burner?

for the love of god dont saddle yourself with a diesel unless your spending your days battering up and down motorways doing 30-40k a year.

a modern diesel will throw some hefty repair bills up in comparison to its petrol powered siblings and the fuel savings are not as much as you would think.

if neccesary bitch slap whatever idiot parent (assumstion here) is forcing you into getting a diesel.

Don't challenge him - the reason for buying a diesel isn't relevant, it just has to be a diesel. Apparently.

As you have specified a complex brief (ohhh sounds like something from spooks) I will make a suitable suggestion that fits in well with your reasoning and openess.

Toureg V10 Tdi.

Enjoy.

The car will be used to travel to London frequently on weekends, mixed with city driving, so i hope any problems involving dpf won't be an issue.

Thanks for all the serious replies.

if your regularly doing brum to london you really dont want a clio/corsa/fiesta

do yourself a serious favour and look at a bigger comfier motorway cruiser,

The obligitory M springs to mind, and you'll get a lot more car for your money in comparison to the small shopping trolleys you've listed.

something like this

or this

or if you dont mind miles get a 3 yr old ex fleet one for your budget :)

if your willing to buy something high mileage you can get the oh so important newer reg plate albeit at the expense of starship mileage, but its a gamble in terms of possible big bills

I'm also curious - I'd have been helluva sad if my first car had to be a diesel.

Am i allowed to ask seeign as i've already given some semi-sensible answers?

Oh I also agree you don't want to be doing reasonable miles in a car that size when you could get something slightly bigger, more suited for that task and inevitably the same/cheaper to insure for the same cash
