First Car Search! Must Be Diesel

indeed if you dont like the idea of a Mondeo (too big )

get a Focii. although you will get less car for the money than the equivilant mondeo.

The car will be used to travel to London frequently on weekends, mixed with city driving, so i hope any problems involving dpf won't be an issue.

Thanks for all the serious replies.

What mileage will you be doing weekly/annually and why are you limited to a Diesel? I'm presuming an order from parents/gf?

Also driving to London, public tansport not on the cards? Just a wild thought.

Just the frequent travelling and the residual values make a diesel sensible imo, it will also be used as a family run around, i dont think theyre keen on filling it up all the time, like i said i just wanted ideas on what i/we should be looking at, primarily i'll be using it, but my parents have a say too. And with it being my first car i dont think theyre keen on some hothatch, they think a diesel hatchback is sensible, to keep me out of trouble, and also on fuel.

Flip that on its head, you'll get a newer petrol and if its a little fiesta sized car it will bejust about as good on fuel, which is cheaper for it anyway. You cant insure anything remotely warm/hot so that's a non concern really.

Is there a reason you cant have a focus sized car (diseasel or petrol) if the insurance works out the same?

To be fair, I had the same from my parents, so know where you were coming from. I had a few pretty naff cars, a Ford Fiesta and a couple of Rover 400s... to save money they were convinced I should buy a newish, small diesel.

I came home with a 200bhp Rover 620ti one day, impressed they were not. Didn't hear the end of it, but secretly my stepdad loved it. :p

All parents are the same, Jay you need to go back to them with some structured reasoning and a few figures as to why a petrol is a better choice, because it is, in the end you should get the car that is best for you, its going to be yours. Unless your going to be doing 18k+ miles a year the diesel is not the right option.

Hawker

I think its because he learnt to drive in a diesel, and can't handle the change to petrol. He'll be stalling constantly.

Focus TDCi btw, at least it will have a smidge of motorway refinement.

Takes about two seconds to adjust, I learnt in a Diesel but took my test in a petrol car that I had only driven for 30 mins before the test. Rubbish excuse.

You're thinking about residual values on your first car. Yes consider them but don't base your buying decision on when and what you might sell for in the future. It's a first car not an investment.

Also the petrol car = boy racer hot hatch is funny. You still haven't told us the mileage you'll be doing? How much annually?

Stand up to your parents with some reasoned and logic responses. If it's mainly your car then you'll be driving it and that's what's most important, not what they want/expect it to be. They should realise this!

Answers to questions please so people can actually help you out, otherwise people will jsut keep hassling you for info and posting witty and snide comments ;)

It does sound like they're paying for it though, so it's unlikely he'll have it all his own way, however reasonably he may argue the points :p

Yep, seems that way, but also more than likely going to be their car/his car with them insured as main driver and him possibly named?

I'm making some assumptions here, but wiithout more info, it's all us non-telepaths can doski!

Tbh it really doesn't matter, your first car could be a lada riva and for you it would still be the best car ever.

Diesel does not sound ideal, but realistically the car wont break unless he is unlucky or plans to own it for many years. Bit sad to have one as your first car though, there's something great about giving a little petrol death. There's nothing great fun about giving a little diesel death. Give the argument for petrol a go, then go and get whatever you're allowed (assuming they are paying) and enjoy the freedom.

Avoid trees, I found this out the hard way. Apparently they dont move

What ridiculous reasoning. If your parents want to save money and minimise risk of further outlay, dont spend 5k on the car in the first place. Especially not on a must-be-new-as-possible, still-depreciating significantly, relatively large-engined and expensive to insure, modern DPF turbo-diesel. Get a 2-ish K, simple, small-engined petrol. Perfect first car. No sense at all these parents!

Skoda Fabia. Not sure what age or engine you'd be looking at with your budget, but you'll get a newer and lower mileage car than a VW Polo for the same money.

+1

I agree entirely, yet I am a 41year old - professional driver - parent!

If it is your money, get what you want. Sensible is not going out and get a Diesel, sensible is not getting a 20 years old Rolls Royce !

Do what I do, get a petrol engine car, no turbo, chain driven even (mine is, like some Toyotas), japanese with a full service history. Check it over, and you will have more trouble free motoring than a Diesel.

I get 40mpg in my petrol engine, how much do you want?
