The car will be used to travel to London frequently on weekends, mixed with city driving, so i hope any problems involving dpf won't be an issue.
Thanks for all the serious replies.

I think its because he learnt to drive in a diesel, and can't handle the change to petrol. He'll be stalling constantly.
Focus TDCi btw, at least it will have a smidge of motorway refinement.
Most likely related to the usual 'diesel is cheaper to run init' but possibly also something along the lines of 'diesel = sensible, petrol = boy racer'?
And with it being my first car i dont think theyre keen on some hothatch, they think a diesel hatchback is sensible, to keep me out of trouble, and also on fuel.

Just the frequent travelling and the residual values make a diesel sensible imo, it will also be used as a family run around, i dont think theyre keen on filling it up all the time, like i said i just wanted ideas on what i/we should be looking at, primarily i'll be using it, but my parents have a say too. And with it being my first car i dont think theyre keen on some hothatch, they think a diesel hatchback is sensible, to keep me out of trouble, and also on fuel.

If it's mainly your car then you'll be driving it and that's what's most important, not what they want/expect it to be. They should realise this!

It does sound like they're paying for it though, so it's unlikely he'll have it all his own way, however reasonably he may argue the points![]()
What ridiculous reasoning. If your parents want to save money and minimise risk of further outlay, dont spend 5k on the car in the first place. Especially not on a must-be-new-as-possible, still-depreciating significantly, relatively large-engined and expensive to insure, modern DPF turbo-diesel. Get a 2-ish K, simple, small-engined petrol. Perfect first car. No sense at all these parents!
also my mother will use the car occasionally.
