Any reason inparticular for a small car?

If not then I would say a 2.0 Mondeo Ghia X. How old are you, that will help out with insurance being less if you are older.

Well doesnt have to be really small..But it would mostly be me in it.. not many other people. Biggest id say .. Mondeo size.

My dad will be paying for the first few years (lucky) and then ill be paying later on. So insurance isnt a big deal really.

Ok then, 2.5 v6 Ghia X. ;) That would be nice.

If you want pure speed and not bothered about much else, then you should be able to get a Saxo VTR for £2k.

Its not just pure speed.
But i just want something that has a bit of power behind it. I've been looking at a few Golf GTi's. Not sure yet. I like the look of Saxo VTR's though..

It is for a first car, and they handle very well. I tend to not measure speed purely on straightline speed.

What mk Golf's you been looking at?
All really..i dont want it to be amazingly fast, but have a nice kick in it when needed etc. I want it to handle well more than anything though.

Oh and also, i have been looking at sub £1k cars too.
Reason for that is to get used to it all..and save money from then on for a better car above £2-3k etc.
What you guys recon?

If you are looking round there, get a 1.6/1.9 205 GTi. They handle better than the Golf counterpart and still goes some. Just have to rev them a bit.

For your first car it could be a good idea. It is afterall the car you will most likely total.

Haha yeah thats fair enough..would you spend sub £1k or over that for your first car?

I spent a grand on my car, 200 (W) Rover 200. It was a good deal, it's only a 1.1 but I've had a few hairy moments in it which would have been a lot hairier if I'd had a more powerful car.

Get a low powered car for the first year or 2 in my opinion.

Hmm, im not overly keen on Rovers myself but i will have a look.

I dont want it to be too big, as streets around here arent the widest.

Any ideas about getting a Clio or anything?

I disagree - what if you misjudge pulling out of a junction and need to put your foot down to get out of the way? In a 1.1, nothing's going to happen very quickly...

Also, joining motorways and dual carriageways must be horrible, building up speed must take ages.

Well depends. I decided to spend £4k on my first car, in some ways it would have been nice to get a cheap car as then I wouldn't ever have to worry about leaving it anywhere. I was originally looking at buying a 205 1.4 XS/GT/Roland Garros as my first car, until my parents persuaded me away. I still sometimes wish I got one. The reason from my parents was reliability, but really they arn't bad, they are just use to buying new cars and keeping for 3 years only.

I personally wouldn't want a slow first car, power used wisely can get you out of situations very well.

Thats what i was thinking. Im looking at around 1.6..But im not sure.

If you were in my position would you:

Spend Sub £1k or over that?
Get a low powered car or a more of a higher power car. 1.1 - 1.9etc
