Give Waze a try.

I heard Waze sends you on all sorts of weird and wonderful routes just to shave off a minute when like most folks you’d rather just stay on the motorway and slow down for a short period than go through backroads. Is it possible to disable or change the overly aggressive re-routing?

I've personally not experienced that but I only recently switched back to it from Google Maps.

No, Google Maps doesn't show speed on iOS either, it never has.

Knew I wasn't going mad, as I say it was either os, I just couldn't quite remember which having had iphones for years too! Silly iOS don't get it though.

It has nothing to do with iOS, it’s the developer, in this case Google.
