First page of website

I've just bought a domain name and 1 years hosting. I've uploaded the webpages using the cpanel interface and it's worked correctly but when I go to the website url I see the parent directory and the names of the webpages I uploaded.

I gather I need to put a redirect or something on the root page but not sure how to do it or what file I need to change.

Is the index.html page in the 'www' directory?

EDIT: Sometimes- 'public_html' directory.

you have to make one of the pages named 'index.html' As this is what the web server looks for as the first page of your site.
