number 2 is my favourite ! I would (as someone new to all this) appreciate some more of the experienced people to come in and take a peek, and see what they think on how any potential improvements could be made... !

I'd say the first one lacks clarity really. There are no clear features to draw the eye to.

The second one is slightly out of focus. I can't make my mind up if it's because of some camera shake or the focus was too far ahead of the head.

The third one seems perfect (baring in mind they're all far too small to be certain). You've got the position of the little fella right, the image seems sharp and the DOF seems to work really well.

I like the forth because it amuses me :D I think it's slightly underexposed though. Maybe a fiddle in photoshop (or other software you have) will bring some detail out :)

thanks for the feedback. like i said, i am very new to this so any comments are appreciated. have sorted the size out now, so perhaps you will be able to give a better judgement now. im not really sure what underexposed actually means, so i will have to learn so i know what to do about it! it was a very sunny day, so it was a bit glary on the water, maybe that has something to do with it? i was using the fully automatic setting, but focusing manually, i guess that affects exposure too. hopefully the resize gives a better view of the images for further comments.

Thanks again. :)

a good way to learn exposure is to learn how to use the histogram feature, im not sure if the 350d has it but if it has, it will help you. That and using exposure compensation button will steer you in the right direction.
All this said, there is a whole kettle of fish of other things that affect exposure (practically everything.. shutter speed, aperture,ISO), i just think this may help you at first as its sort of a automatic/easy setting to change.
ah, also make sure you are using the right monitoring setting on your camera. your manual should explain which to use for which situation
all this said im still new aswell so i think the info i have given is correct, its all stuff I have read and learned. need one of the experts to correct me if i wrong :)

Third one is the best imo. Looks a little washed out though, could do with some post processing. alangelluk is right though, you should try to fix this when you take the picture rather than in a program afterwards :)

#1 Just doesn't appear to be quite in focus, not as sharp as it should be. This can be fixed to some extent in photoshop:

#2 Better but the focus appears to be on the end of the beak, rather than the eye which would look better imo.

#3 I like this one, like I said it could do with some adjustments though, maybe like so:

#4 Same as the first one really, seems to be very slightly out of focus, shame as it would have been quite nice.

The adjustments were mostly smart sharpen, levels, curves, hue and saturation etc. however I also added some slight gaussian blur to the first picture to try and make the head stand out more.

Hopefully you think they look better :)
