i know this image doesn't show it, but the Kit-Lens is sharper then people give it credit for.

It's a bit dark and would benefit from a tighter crop. All that empty space either side detracts from the image.

Thats not where your focusing. Look at the top of that crop, your focusing further back.

The flower at the very top left of that crop is the most in-focus part of it.
