Hi guys, just a question regarding one of my fish, people on here have usually been able to help quite well when i had a fin tail with a swim bladder problem.

Anyway, recently I have got a new tank, this one is now 25l and contains 4 medium sized fish (about 3-7 cm in length) and 5 small minnows (2cm), now I noticed recently one of the fish in there (they are all new by the way) started to get white spoth on it and now seems quite lifeless compared to the rest, I have just cleaned the tank out so the water is nice and oxygenated, ive also noticed that its rear fin is breaking up a bit at the end and also the "steering" fins? The type of fish in question doesnt have a dorsal fin anyway.

Just wondered if anyone had any ideas and possible treatment methods?

Thanks all.

Well that's not much help...in this weather surely he'd be better just grilling them on a George Foreman?

Nah, as they're so small, just coat in seasoned flour and deep fry them.

I'd change all the water and any gravel etc. Add a little sat to the water if it's fresh water or use one of the additives you can get.

They arent even big enough to be an appetiser.

Best bet is Myaxin, available from any aquarium or pet shop. For a 25l tank a couple of small drops every two days should be enough. Bottle will tell proper measurement. Always have a bottle of Myaxin and Protozin in my draw, they treat a lot of issues.

Yeah, but it is normally better to isolate the infected fish if you have another small tank available. I always keep a small "hospital" tank in the cellar i use to treat any that get an infection.

OK thanks for your help. I will go and have a look at whats on offer at the shop. I have a small 10l tank spare somewhere.

When you say you cleaned the tank out do you mean you removed all the water? You should only be doing partial water changes. Also is this tank cycled?

by cycled I assume you mean does it have a water filter and pump system? If so then yes it does. I also have an air pump to keep the water well oxygenated.

yes I did a complete water change, I always have? I didnt realise this was a problem?

As already mentioned, you really shouldn't be replacing all the water. Are you treating the water from the tap before you put it in the tank as well?

Maintaining water that is balanced for your fish is vital to their survival. Basically, you have good bacteria and bad bacteria in the tank - you need to cycle the water correctly to get rid of bad bacteria and build up good bacteria and then only do partial water changes to maintain this.

This was all news to me too when i first got mine, so there's quite a lot to learn. I found a lot of help on this site here:

There's loads of useful articles on caring for your fish, and it's a v. helpful community.

i use one of those gravel hoovers every few months just to get up the crap from within the gravel, and clean my ornaments at the same time. Just make sure when you clean the ornaments you do it with the water you removed during the water change, not fresh tap water if you can help it.
