Ammonia poisoning would this kill any life in the fish tank?

I don't think a "small filter" would have made any difference, you would have had to have some massive filtration system on a 75L tank with even 1 single koi! Also it would have had to be cycled before use.

10 inch Koi in a 75 litre tank? Are you sure it was as small as 75 litres?
50cm by 50cm by 30cm, thats 75 litres right?
A 10 inch Koi could barely turn around in that.

750litre maybe?

I think yu'll find he is using the 75l tank as a custom filter, if you read the post properly...

ere using a large 75 letre tank with lots of different foam, lava rocks, stones etc, which is a bio-filter tried and tested, but as it is set into the ground on the same level as the pond, we couldn't use it for the tank.

ahh, thats more understandable, so they had minitank filter, and it was unusable, makes much more sence.

Its far too much effort to feed and look after fish.

Just wait until they're floating at the top, remove them and buy more to restock the tank. I heard that's what some people do.

So you spent all that money without doing a little basic research on how to keep them/not to keep them?

as a keen koi keeper for 20 years i feel pretty sure what the problem was, due to having large fish in a small volume of water with no filters the ammonia and nitrite levels went through the roof and why there was bleeding from the gills also turning off the air pumps just about finnished them off, with keeping koi its all about keeping good water quality, ask any koi keeper and he will tell you look after the water and the fish will look after themselves, if you had seeked advice before then someone like myself would have told you to buy a paddling pool at least and filter it and add a few airstones whilst you repaired the pond but then hindsight would be a wonderfull thing if we all had it

One of the first things you should know about about fishkeeping.

Nitrite is more toxic because it interferes with the blood oxygen transport - ammonia is a close second.

Sorry to the OP for your loss but might be a good idea to get a cheap outdoor paddling pool and a 2nd hand filter from the bay incase this happens again - for £20ish outlay it'll save you £££ in fish.

Not that it will make you feel any better but the damage was probably done as any length of exposure to high nitrite/ammonia can cause permanent damage to the fish, particularly immune system.

Hopefully a hard lesson learned - anyone into the hobby has made mistakes as well

Ammonia build up happens before Nitrite though and is therefore more likely to have been the COD with it being so soon after the transfer. (Cause of death, excuse the pun ).
