Hey,

I've never been allowed any pets, but now I've got my own pad I've been thinking I want some company! Can't have a dog, cat or llama (top 3 preferences out), so I thought why not get some fish!

So I guess I'm interested to here fish related experiences, see your fish setups and just get tips from all you fish owners :D ideally looking for low maintainence fish that look pretty and don't nag (i.e. male fish :p). Not really sure where to start though!

Cheers,

Suman

How about a shark?

You wont need to feed it as every person who sticks their fingers in the tank will provide it with food. *chomp*

Ha, Thge fish getting there own back on us humans enjoying Fish Fingers. :p

i work with them on a weekend selling fish (live ones) pumps/ponds etc.

So are you thinking of getting a cold water tank or tropical?

Erm, well cold water tanks sound easier to maintain and setup than tropical ones... am I right in thinking that? Tropical fish look cooler though :p

fish? cant u get urself a Koala or a helper monkey there pritty damn cool think bout it you can have the helper monkey cook for you, or if you are slightly insane u could cook the helper monkey and eat thats if it gets to high maintainence. Ide guess that would also work with the Koala. Though it may cling to your arm so you may find it difficult to actually cook.

Ive not really delt with tropical as we do are cold water fish, but they are easy to set up.

Any idea what fish you are wanting? Or how big a tank your wanting is?

Tank about 2 foot wide, a foot high, but not too deep (gonna be placed on a thin-ish sideboard).

Not really fussed about what kinds of fish... as long as they aren't too fugly and boring it's cool :D

I have kept fish for nearly 20 years now, all types.... So here are some hints:
Coldwater - Easiest but Boring
Tropical Freshwater - Easy, more money spent = less maintenance! (i.e. large external filters)
Marine - Next to impossible without spending a fortune!

Last tank I had was 6' long x 30" x 30", used for marine and Tropicals.

You could pick up a small setup out of the freeads for less than £100, just add about £50 to that for a good external cannister filter and all you would need to do is change 10% of water every week to 10 days and that's basically it!

hehe, you will obviously need a gold fish or two as well...everyone has to have a golfish :p

I'd suggest getting a red golfish, its the same its just more colourful :D

edit: this is if you get cold water

as said above tropical is more interesting

Can I get fish that eat the algae and stuff so I don't have to arse about cleaning tanks and changing water every month and stuff like that?

Yes, Plecostomous Catfish, just be careful which ones, some don't eat it and some can get to 2foot long or more!

Sucking loaches can also do it, but tbh they suck!

there are certain catfish that will go along and eat it
Where are you thinking of putting the tank? Keep it out of direct sunlight as sun + water = algie

edit: Also a good filter will help with the cleaning

Not an expert but my nana's tank has some rock sucking fish that apparantly cleans as it eats.

Should see it go, it's like an underwater dyson lol :D

I'll be around my nana's house some time this week possibly so I'll get a picture if I can!

Fish don't really do much tbh. I had 3 goldfish (well, 1 was black) but I got bored of them & flushed them down the loo. I tried not feeding them for a bit but that didn't work so they went rounds the s-bend in the end.
