I'm building a comp for a mate of mine and he's managed to acquire a very cheap ABit KV8 and a very very cheap Sempron 64 3400.

It says on the ABit site to update to the latesr Bios to support Semprons. Does this mean I'm going to have to source another S754 A64 to flash the Bios or will I be able to put the Sempron in and then flash the Bios, will the board even boot?

Cheers for any ideas.

You may just have to try and see . If you can adjust the multiplier, fsb on the board try setting them low . On two of my previous boards a soltek and msi I put in a mobile barton 2500 overclocked to 3200 , both of these boards just saw the cpu as unknown as the bios on both boards did not officially support the mobile athlon but ran fine .

You should just be able to plug it in

I built a Socket A Sempron 2300+ system about a year ago and the BIOS detected it as an Athlon XP 1900+ before the BIOS flash

Previous systems have either said "unknown CPU" or defaulted to a low end CPU (as an example my XP2100+ was detected as an XP 1500+ before the BIOS flash)

Thanks for the info, but it wouldn't boot just froze after the uGuru initialized. Have managed to borrow an A64 to flash with though.

From what I understand from the Abit-usa forums the semprons before the E6's were ok but the E6's confuse the bios. :(
