...is it on its way out or is it a software problem?4-year-old Compaq Presario 2500. Seems to be doing it in all applications.

No ideas? Any extra info I can provide to help diagnosis? I thought that it might be the power connector, if it wasn't making good contact maybe the monitor was constantly switching back and forth to the lower brightness setting that it's set to on battery power, so I ran it unplugged for a while but it still appears to be flickering. No recent software changes beyond Windows updates.
