Flight Tax Rises?

Just had an email from Easyjet:

"You may have heard that the Chancellor, Gordon Brown, recently announced that Air Passenger Duty (APD) - a tax implemented, controlled and collected by the UK Government - is due to increase on all flights departing from UK airports after 1 February 2007.

We're very sorry to tell you that unfortunately this affects your booking with the above reference.

easyJet was one of many airlines which lobbied the Government hard not to increase the tax on flying. Contrary to what the Chancellor said, we do not believe that increasing APD is an effective environmental tax.... [snip]"

I leave on the 27th of January. Return in February.

Can anyone tell me if you are charged airline tax on your ticket for arrivals as well?

Labour Government Strategy

1. Increase a tax or introduce a new tax.

2. Justify it with pathetic dishonesty.

Do they honestly think people will stop flying because the tickets are slightly more expensive? The demand won't just disappear over night. All it means is that "cheap flights" will be slightly more expensive, and people will still be prepared to pay for them. They could at least say they are trying to "discourage" people from unnecessary flying, rather than stating this environmental tax "WILL" be effective.

I have many flight s booked for next year that were booked before the rise and none have tried to charge me extra

I've got a booking with VA for March, and I haven't been contacted yet either. From what little i've read on the topic though, i'm expecting to be either contacted soon or charged the extra when I check in.

Well its a tax, so it will be charged at the prevailing rate at the time of the flight. So either the airline has to absorb the change, or come to you cap in hand for the extra.....

I'ev not seen the wording of the tax so I don't know if you pay the tax rate at the time of booking or the time of travellling

From what i've read before (and for the life of me I can't find where at the minute), if the ticket was purchased prior to when the new tax rates came into effect, then you will have to pay the difference.

I just wanted to dig this thread up and confirm that I did indeed have to pay the extra tax when I checked in at Heathrow a couple of weeks ago (American Airlines, NOT VA as previously stated).

oh **** , I have flights with EVA in a couple of weeks and if they are charging looks like it will cost me 80 quid ( 2x40 ) extra

This is only the start Rott, i've heard that the rate will be rising fairly steeply.

BY the way, we got charged £30 each a couple of weeks ago (Heathrow to Boston).
