If youre not going to visit any theme parks (God knows why because theyre awesome) then dont bother with Florida at all. The Keys are ok for a few days but thats about it.

If you can do NYC, Niagra, Toronto, Montreal and Ottawa if you can.

The drive from TO to Montreal is around 6 hours. There are bits to do on the way like 1000 islands to break up the trip. I've heard mixed reviews on 1000 islands. Ottawa from Montreal is 2 hours IIRC.

If you like camping / walking etc Algonquin provincial park is awesome. Around 5-6 hours north of Toronto.

Voted Canada.

I found Florida great for theme parks and shopping. Nothing else. The drives were long and boring, just swamps for miles on end. I've got a feeling you like motor vehicles so if you insist on Florida try and be in Old Town on a Saturday night for the car show. Over 300 Classic cars, hot rods, street rods and antiques – all 1974 and older – are on display every Saturday. Good atmosphere as well.

I've travelled on road from NYC up to Niagra falls. That part of the trip will be pretty boring but after that you can enjoy the falls and the great lakes. I don't know how far west you want to go but I REALLY recommend coming back to the USA and finishing in Chicago. Not only is O'Hare airport a big travel hub but Chicago's one of the best cities in the world.

All the great scenery is west I absolutely loved canada the train in the best way to see it. Rocky mountaineer was amazing. Never fancied the train journey?

The west is really nice. I've heard great things about the train ride through the rockies. Unfortunately it is expensive.

Canada hands down - It's a beautiful country - I've only seen Vancouver, but I plan on one day doing a big ol drive around it :D

I'd say it depends on what type of trip your looking for. For me personally though I think you'd get a more diverse trip and see more on the road trip into Canada.

Which trip would you choose and why? Anything unmissable on either one? Not really bothered about theme parks.

Time of year is probably September. I'm aware that might be an interesting time to visit Florida... :D

Option B as the first one takes you through Bible Belt! Oh and I think the scenery on option B would be a lot better - the southern states can eb a little flat.

Oh and I have been to Florida during hurricane season and yes it was very interesting.

5 years ago we did the Canada option in reverse. Flew into Toronto, stayed with relatives for a week in Simcoe outside Toronto, drove to Niagra and stayed a couple of nights there (though realistically one would have been enough, once you've seen the falls and niagra-on-the-lake thats all there is really) After Niagra we drove down to Pittsburgh and stayed there a week, and have to say it is a lovely city, lots to do as far as sightseeing goes, and they have a decent NFL team if you are into that sort of thing!

Scenery is lovely on the drive down/up, weather around that time of year was perfect for us (high 20's, low 30's) and was one of my best holidays to date. Definately reccomend it over Florida.

This year I am going for:

Washington DC
Roanoke (Via Skyline Drive)
Asheville (smokies, Via Blue Ridge Parkway)
Lynchburg (Jack Daniels Distillery)
Chatanooga
Atlanta
Orlando
Savannah
Charleston
Myrtle Beach
Back to Washington.

Total 2600miles

Or at least some form of that. Probably one way now DC to Orlando and fly back to save time. Car hire drop fee is a fair bit, but it's offset by not needing the car as long (about 1900miles.)

We have previously done a Florida trip:

Miami
Key West
Key Largo
Fort Myres
Tampa/St. Petes
Orlando (based here with day trips to: )
Daytona
Cape Canaveral
St. Augustine

That was a good trip.
