Folding@Home News 14th - 21st Jan 2011

First part of the prep for my SB build, removing the 240 rad from my other rig is complete, I've just bought a Phobya Xtreme Nova 1080 rad from the MM for this rig which I'm hoping to run semi passive, but until that arrives it's a little 120 I had laying around for now. I'm actually quite impressed the temps are not even at 60 yet with the Q6600 and 260 with both crunching.

Biffa, what 240 rad would you suggest replacing my EK with as I
managed puncture it.

I'm guessing there isn't much difference between the Thermochill PA,TA, XSPC RX and the SR-1. Ideally looking for the least noise possibe.

It'll be cooling my Phenom II and going along side the XSPC RS120 but thats struggling on its own with any kind of OC

Not much difference for slow speed on all of those, also the Swiftech MCR220 is a good bet. Check this out, its for 360 rads but you can extrapolate down.

Thanks Biffa

Looks like the RX then as it copes marginally better with low fan speeds (600RPM)

EDIT: The big one has finally landed :D

Anyone folded on xp64 and windoes 7 64 if so is performance the same, a small % change could make a big differance for me on bigadv.

Running on windows 2008 server 64bit for the SR-2 which I think is Vista tech.

hi guys, forgive me if this is the wrong thread.
i have been wondering about this for a while

i have just read the folding@home sticky. but i still have a few questions

can i choose when to fold?
and also can i set the amount of cpu/gpu usage to be used eg. 60% so i can still use pc when folding.
do i just leave pc on overnight, and let it fold?
also i have a q6600 and a hd3870x2, is it worth me folding?

1. Yes you can choose when to fold
2. Yes you can set the amount of cpu usage
3. You can just fold overnight if you want to
4. Probably for the points/watt the 3870x2 isn't worth folding on, you could run BOINC and milkyway@home on. The Q6600 depending on overclock will net you between 4-6,000 Points Per Day (PPD)

Thanks Biffa

Conga-Rats on the tiffe buddy :)

On the radiators, depends really if you count +-0.2 degrees as significant compared to the +-£ difference in your wallet:

MCR220 - £37
EK XT240 - £39
XZPC RX240 - £52
TC PA120.2 - £58 :(
HWL SR1240 - £81

Thats what I was thinking, I want to keep cost down however I think one of the big boys in terms of rads will offer me better perforemance the the EK XT I was running before.

I was previously getting mid to late 40 degrees with a RS120 and an EK 240 on a CPU only loop

40° would be nirvanah for any of my kit! :D

Was that the phenom @ 4ghz?

Is that a good temp? I dunno what phenoms run at in terms of temps.

Most of my i7 kit runs at near 60 at 4Ghz. The 2600K is cooler by 10-15°

EK I bypassed, they got bad reviews when they came out, not much better than the thin rads.

What I meant was the Swiftech is worth a mention for performance/$ reasons alone. But if you want to go a thickie I'd go for the XSPC RX240

Yup Phenom II @ 4ghz, thats CPU temp not core temps as AMD chips don't have sensors in the cores. Thermal limit is 63'c on a Phenom II.

4ghz(1.45v) with EK240 and RS120 45-50 degrees

Currently 3.4 (1.35v) with RS120 57'c

Thats good for a phenom in terms of temps most air coolers keep them around mid 50s at 4ghz if you get a chip that hits 4ghz. Most crap out at 3.8ish as far as im aware

EDIT: Most chips also need considerably more vcore for 4ghz as well, 1.45 is very low, 1.5+ is normally needed

what mobo are you running your Phenom II on
Im looking at getting a new one to pair up my Phenom II X6 1090t with.
I know from the guy i bought it from got it too 4Ghz but run it 3.6Ghz
but the current board its in wont even allow me to up it to 3.4Ghz.

I'm hoping to be getting a 955/1055t soon, so I should be pushing a few points.

Unfortunately, I can't leave on my rig constantly at the moment, so I'm only averaging 1.5k ppd on the GPU. Still, I'm climbing up the ranks. :D

This chip has run on the following 3 boards at 4ghz

Gigabyte 880GM-UD2H
Gigabyte MA74GMT-S2
Asus M4A785TD-V Evo

Currently in the 880GM-UD2H

The asus needed a little more vcore than the Gigabyte boards due to Vdroop even with LLC enabled. The 740G I wouldn't actually recommend as it has very weak VRMs that we're causing the PCB to go slightly green due to heat.

I'd say the Asus is the better board for clocking due to heatsinks on VRMs etc which the gigabytes didnt.

What board are you currently running?

Dependant on your budget a Crosshair III Formula would be a good shout and they're not too bad on price at around £100 now.

Give me a shout if you've any more questions I'll try and help with what experience I've got with AMD kit.

Well 3 blue screens, 1 leak, a complete redesign and 8 hours later I'm finally getting to the part were I can install some software! Yay!

currently got the 1090t running in an Asus M3A79-T Deluxe with 2 Gb crucial balistix 8500 ddr2 init running XP Pro
Also got a Phenom II X4 940 running in an Asus M3A32 MVP with 4Ghz Kingston HyperX 8500 again ive been unable to clock this past its stock clocks running Win7 Ultimate
However ive replaced the M3A32 MVP with a new one same board, and have not tried clocking with it yet
