News! All going well here, my 460s although still running fairly hot are stable with a slight overclock. Very tempted to get a 970 instead though...

thank, I noticed you had started producing again. 970s are brilliant , run very cool and great PPD. even if you don't want a new one you can pick them up for under £200 used!

just look at the best go :D

You're right it makes sense, probably uses the same or less power than the 460s as well. I'll get new as I like the peace of mind of the warranty, for folding purposes is there anything that helps when choosing one card over the other? Higher clocks or more memory etc? Or will a bog standard 970 get you similar PPD as the more expensive ones?

because they run cool inaway id just look at the cards which offer the best service rather than best coolers, zotac has a 5 year warranty so that's definitely a brand to consider , my self I went for evga which has a 3 year warranty. when I was looking around online most overclocked to 1500mhz easy when boosted, memory clocks does nothing for folding as far as im aware

So 4 970's is cheaper than 2 980ti

Which would you choose because I think the 980 would match them for points total per day. But running costs would be greater for 970s would they? I need to try on my watt metre when I get home.

1. 2 v 4 gpus running 24/7 power costs will be cheaper
2. depends on what work units the cards get 4 x 970 with decent wu will be well over 1million PPD , myn had 340k from one unit as above in the screen shot!!

you already have 2 970s col , thats anything from 250k to 300k + per card depending on o/c and work unit

I think you have the same evga card as I have

found this from another forum in regards to the 980 ( NONE TI ) power draw :o
My GTX 980 is running at 450K PPD with total system draw of 220W (not including monitor), without the 980 running, my system pulls about 105W - This is in Ubuntu 14.10.
So, go figure about 300+K with a 970 with similar or lower power draw

i would spend an extra £10 and get a windforce oc, just because the cooler is much better.

i would choose 2 980ti tbh, because unless you have x99 you will run out of pcie lanes and 4 cards in one rig will get hot unless water cooled.

ye even the gigabyte has 3 year Warranty and is uk based, which ever 970 you picked would do a decent job as only 1 card wouldn't get to hot inaway and draw less than 2 460s but give 10 times the performance.

I seriously need to make my setups more streamlined, as I'm not taking advantage of the motherboards I have really, only using two cards per machine.

Think I'm gonna eventually ditch my z68 and my x2 680 and x2 780ti on MM then put any cash towards populating the spare pci lanes I'll have left over.

I have two boards (Z10PE & x79 Deluxe) capable of taking four cards but I think 3 is enough without having to replace psu's. My X99 will replace my z68 everyday system.

So if I keep to 3 cards per Z10 + X79 and 2 cards x99 that's 8 slots to fill. I can fill 4 of them and have 4 still to populate. The 970 seems like a cheaper quick way to do this or I see what comes along on MM.

Maybe I'm getting a wee bit carried away but I do tend to be rather impulsive, the fact that I made a tidy profit on shares recently is making my pockets burn.

Hey maybe even the freecycle thread might get used I did keep the air coolers for 780ti ;)

you already have 2 970s col, even just selling of some of your older stuff would pay for 2 more! that's 1000'000 PPD MIN but overclock them abit and itll be more like 1.1 - 1.2 million ppd

arnt the 780ti worth using? look at robs output from his 780ti, still very good, unless you need to fill an ever growing upgrade bug lol

780 and 970 are very similar true with regards to ppd, I should check the power draw and compare. Told you I'm compulsive... :D

Update: Seems there is about 70W difference under load, so this suggests ditching 780ti for adding 970s is pointless in real world terms...

not unless you can sell the 780tis for near what you would pay for a pair of 970s. recent members market shows a 780ti air cooled sold for £200 inc postage, if you could get that plus sell the blocks of aswell then you would be within £30 - 40 of buying new 970s

I'm just remembering Biffa telling me previously the only compute score that matters for Folding is single-precision implicit. Just looking back at Anandtech reviews as they seem to be only place to use FAHBench.

Nanoseconds per day as follows..
980ti= 316.9
970= 253.8
780ti= 195.1

Seems pretty clear cut looking at that.

You've nothing to worry about Oz, I won't be hitting FAH for long, getting back in the top 20 would be nice however.
I currently have 2 x r 290s which give a nice return, a 7970 which is Ok and a 7950 which is rubbish in comparison.
