Folding@Home News 19th - 26th November 2010

Have just downloaded the latest WinXP SMP client and set it up as per the instructions given on the Stanford site. Looking under Task Manager, there's one instance of FahCore_a3.exe running at 99%, with HFM reporting a PPD of 7600 and an ETA of ~9 hours (GROMACS project 6073). Even though HFM says that both -advmethods and -smp flags are being used, is it actually running in SMP mode? I was expecting four instances to be running at 25% each on my quad-core, but haven't done folding for a long time so might be talking rubbish :D

Oh, one other thing. At the moment I'm running it via a console box window but I installed it as a service. Looking at the service properties, there is no mention of either flag in the executable path. Is this right or does it need changing?

Thanks :)

Yep, the folding clients use one process for the fah_core, and that process uses as many threads as required/told to use.

I think service mode doesn't work properly. I wouldn't bother with it.

Service mode runs fine here on Win 7 64bit. You must have a user account with a password set and run fah.exe as an administrator to install it as a service. Once installed as a service open the service manager find Folding@home-CPU-[x] (Replacing x with Machine ID) click the log on tab. You need to select the this account option -> Browse -> Type your account name then click OK then type your account password below twice. This should work as its how mine is setup and runs perfectly fine.

Did you set the -smp flag in the additional parameters section when you configured your FAH client?

If you did then there is no need. Just remeber to set your passkey as well for those lovely A3 bonuses

Biffa, does your GTX460 ever give you 10,888ish on any of these P6800 WUs? Wonder if it is the WUs or the card throttling.

Close to, depends how busy the machine is I guess:

Name: Mars GTX 460
Path: D:\fah\gpu\
Number of Frames Observed: 300

Min. Time / Frame : 00:01:35 - 11,804.97 PPD
Avg. Time / Frame : 00:01:41 - 11,103.68 PPD

Must say guys it brings a tear to me ole eye to see you all getting into or back into Folding :) Even if it is just because your favourite project is down at the mo :)

Well in better news I've just got this, got to be one of the most rewarding tiffys:

And I'm now ranked 8th in the Team. Should be 6th shortly where I'll likely remain for the foreseeable future.

Also there is a possiblity I'll get an EVGA GTX480 for my faulty GTX295 according to the guy from EVGA I just heard back from, obviously don't want to get my hopes up too much but it would be very nice!

bigadv is a lesson in patience and in disappointment.

You wait 2-3 days for WU dumpage [patience] then go "wow" at your huge PPD. Then you spend the next 2-3 days watching your PPD slowly fall! [disappointment :(]
