Folding@Home Weekly Team News - 15th June 2006

From my experience it's the general pain in the bum that F@H's setup is that puts people off.

Just an idea, but perhaps right at the very top of the stick you should have something like:

You will need to have done the following steps to fully install F@H:

GUI:
  • Downloadthe GUI version.
  • Follow the installation guide in the sticky, if you have problems either post here or goto the IRC channel for help.
  • etc

Command Line:
  • Download the cmd version.
  • Follow the installation guide in the sticky, if you have problems either post here or goto the IRC channel for help.
  • Complete the regedit.
  • Start the service in services.msc
  • Download FahMon latest client
  • Reboot your computer
  • Open your config.cfg file in wordpad/notepad and check that your name and team are correct, if not run the -clientonly, etc.

- You get the idea ;)

It's just the sticky on it's own is rather daunting and people who are only half-minded about doing it, that is they would if it was easier are easily put off.

4th in the producers list :D Happy days.. Not a bad week.. It appears that i've passed all the slackers now and tougher times lay ahead.

Still looks interesting between the climbing 3 - my self, BigDom and Billy ..

Well done team and welcome new comers :)

I agree, thats why the quick and easy guide exists. I'll see about revising it with a summary of what needs to be done to get folding or something like that.

I've updated the sticky's links to reflect Nix's new section. There's a blank post by me right before the end so I suppose that the Vista guide will have to go there once we know enough about the system.

I've also updated the Linux guide becasue the URL for the finstall script changed.

I fold 24/7 and only get just over 350 a week :(

What are you running? I use my laptop for everything and it usually quite happily gets 800-900 a week by itself even with me using it for other stuff. (Mostly games I must admit.)

Just had another read of that and i can't see how to fit it into the quick guide. Thats basically what the quick guide consists of, just with explanations of how to do each bit. Have a read of the quick guide and see if you can see anything you would like changing or anyway that your suggestion might be incorporated into it.

I'm still going to do the folding myths section.

The link in my sig goes to the quick guide btw.

Perhaps under the table of contents you could have a "What needs to be done" section, probably under the yellow text. What do you think?

The folding myths is just about done, your comments/ideas/suggestions please.

I'll tidy up fonts, sizes, colours and links later. This will become a poll thread in the gd at some point.

Edit: Just thought i'd point out that the russians have almost 3 times as many users as us but only twice the production. Compared to many other teams we have a high average production per user. :)

I noticed you building yourself a nice daily average there you pesky seafarer ;)

I will be home on Monday so should get these annoying little problems sorted out and hopefully sneak back into the top 5 next week.

I will be giving one of my single core rigs to my kids soon so I will be a core down again :(

Looks like it's back to http://www.overclockers.co.uk/acatalog/ :D

What will it be this time chaps and chapesses?

Should I go for another X2 3800 in the hope of getting another uberclocker like the last one or should I go for one of the cheap 805s which allegedly clock like good uns too?

I'm kinda tempted by the P4 as I gave my Northwood to my Dad recently (replaced by the X2 3800, before anyone accuses me of slacking :p ) and don't have one at the moment.
I'm also curious to see if I can get one of the ones which will do 4GHz+ on air.

Thanks as always to Rich for the time and effort doing the news and a warm foldy welcome with manly hugs for the influx of new folders - have fun :D

1. I can't be bothered.
-You don't deserve to get help from anyone on this forum

I am not entirely sure this will help convince people! More likely make people stop reading there and then and not bother with F@H out of principle :p

I think a better answer would probably be:

1. I can't be bothered.
-If you can find time to browse this forum surely you can find 5 minutes to start folding!

Or something to that effect.
